Chloé Zhao, the director who won an Oscar, directed the pilot episode for the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer series on Hulu, and she’s a longtime fan of the original show. In a recent interview, she revealed her favorite episode is season three’s “The Prom.” Zhao shared that at the wrap party for the new pilot, she gave Sarah Michelle Gellar a replica of the award her character received in that episode as a gift. You can listen to Zhao tell the full story on the Instagram page for the Slayerfest 98 podcast.
The episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer called “The Prom” is a fan favorite. In it, Buffy saves her high school’s prom from a demonic invasion while dealing with a recent breakup with her vampire boyfriend, Angel. A particularly heartwarming moment happens when the students present Buffy with a special award: an umbrella labeled “Class Protector,” acknowledging that the class of ’99 had the lowest death rate ever because of her. While Sarah Michelle Gellar loves the episode, she didn’t keep the original umbrella prop. So, director Chloé Zhao had a new one made and even recreated the speech given to Buffy by the character Jonathan.
Zhao shared a potentially divisive opinion with fans: she prefers the relationship between Buffy and Spike over Buffy and Angel. Surprisingly, she’s also grown to appreciate Riley Finn, a boyfriend many fans strongly dislike. It’s ironic, though, because Riley is the only one of Buffy’s main love interests who didn’t try to harm her or her friends. Sarah Michelle Gellar hinted that former Buffy cast members might return for the new series, and many people thought Marc Blucas, who played Riley, wouldn’t be one of them. However, that might not be the case. While the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot doesn’t have a release date on Hulu yet, we anticipate more information soon.
