As a seasoned gamer who has witnessed the evolution of gaming since the days of Pong and Pac-Man, I must admit that the Chinese gaming market’s growth this year is nothing short of astonishing. Having spent countless hours on both mobile and PC games, I can attest to the quality of the games coming out of China these days – a far cry from the simple 8-bit graphics of yesteryears.
In 2021, China’s video game industry recorded a staggering sale of approximately $44.8 billion, representing a 7.53% growth compared to the preceding year. Additionally, the player count expanded slightly to roughly 674 million individuals.
In summary, mobile gaming took over the market share, representing about three-quarters (73%) and generating approximately 238.2 billion yuan in revenue, showing a 5% increase. Meanwhile, PC games held around one-fifth (20.9%) of the market, earning roughly 68 billion yuan.
The sales of video games created in China experienced a notable growth of 13.4%, amounting to approximately $18.6 billion – marking an increase after three consecutive years of decline. The United States continued to be the primary foreign market, accounting for 31.1% of the revenue, with Japan and South Korea following closely at 17.3% and 8.9%, respectively. Interestingly, Saudi Arabia joined the top 10 markets for Chinese mobile games, signaling its expanding interest in gaming and esports industries.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve gotta say, the launch of heavyweight games like “Black Myth: Wukong” has been a game-changer for me and gamers worldwide. Developed by the talented folks at Game Science, who have Tencent backing them, this epic title has put China on the AAA gaming map. Not only did it win the Best Action Game award at The Game Awards 2024 in LA, but it’s been raking in sales domestically and internationally like never before!
Last year, in 2021, Chinese authorities took action against several sectors, including gaming, with a crackdown that was quite intense. Fortunately, the intensity of this action has eased since then. However, recently, the country’s media regulator has announced additional guidelines for December, focusing on limiting excessive spending within online games. As a gamer, I keep an eye on these changes to ensure my gaming experience remains balanced and responsible.
Tencent holds a significant position in both China’s mobile gaming sector, accounting for half of it, and the global gaming industry, making up nearly one-third. It stands out as the most financially successful gaming company compared to competitors like Microsoft, Sony, Apple, Google, EA, or Nintendo, often surpassing them by multiple fold in earnings.

According to the China Audio-Video and Digital Publishing Association, recent government policies have become more favorable after the initial clampdown, and public sentiment has remained positive. This year’s growth rate, although lower than the 14% observed in 2023, suggests a stable rebound in consumer spending and an abundance of upcoming game releases with strong potential.
The rapid growth of the gaming sector can be seen through the steady increase in gamers, now totaling approximately 674 million – a 0.94% rise. This expansion highlights the industry’s robustness and underscores its substantial impact on China’s digital economy.
In a world where the industry is constantly changing, there’s an ongoing emphasis on striking a balance between expansion and adhering to regulations, all while fostering lasting development within the ever-evolving gaming environment.
