Recently, Chevy Chase expressed his thoughts about what might have allowed him to continue with Saturday Night Live (SNL) past its inaugural season. Famous for making a splash during SNL’s 1975 launch, Chase became well-known as the first host of Weekend Update.
1976 saw the segment he was part of earning him two Primetime Emmy Awards. However, even with this success, Chase opted to depart from the show during its second season prematurely.
Lorne Michaels, the founder of SNL (Saturday Night Live), spoke about Chase’s departure in an interview with The New Yorker before the launch of his new biography titled “Lorne: The Pioneer Behind Saturday Night Live,” which is due for release on February 18.
As an ardent admirer putting it in my own words, Michael expressed that he didn’t push Chase to remain on the show, viewing cast changes as a vital part of its growth and transformation. “The show might suffer temporarily, but we’d manage,” I imagine him saying to his team, reflecting the sentiment reportedly shared at the time.
Chase felt that there was a straightforward method for Michael to keep him on the show indefinitely. He expressed this sentiment by saying, “It wouldn’t have required much effort! All he needed to do was let me know he appreciated me, essentially,” as told to The New Yorker.
To put it simply, Chase expressed that during those times, he often felt intellectually superior and believed himself to be the driving force behind the show, rather than Lorne. However, he also admitted to having initially admired Michael’s humor, recognizing immediately that Lorne was a comical figure.
Post his departure from SNL, Chase achieved considerable fame in movies such as Caddyshack (1980), National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983), and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989). Later on, he starred in the popular NBC sitcom Community.
Currently, Chase is immersed in his family affairs, cherishing his position as grandpa to little Ivy. Although his tenure at SNL was relatively short-lived, the impact he made on the show’s history is profound, earning him a place among its most revered early stars.
