Cher Puts Late Mask Director Peter Bogdanovich On Blast in New Memoir: ‘He Was Not Nice To The Girls’

As a fervent admirer of Cher, I have always been captivated by her courage and resilience, particularly in the face of adversity. Her memoir, a testament to her indomitable spirit, offers a fascinating glimpse into her life experiences, including her tumultuous encounter with the late director Peter Bogdanovich during the filming of Mask.

Without mincing words, Cher is outspoken when confronting those who are in the wrong. This was evident during her time working with director Peter Bogdanovich on the 1985 film Mask. When discussing the promotional campaign for her memoir, the legendary 78-year-old singer and actress openly expressed her displeasure towards Mr. Bogdanovich, labeling him as arrogant and rude to the young girls on set.

As days went by, Bogdanovich’s disrespect towards her intensified, particularly after she reminded him of an incident where he had disparaged her. The Strong Enough singer explained that when he requested a suitable location for filming a scene, his suggestion of using the kitchen was dismissed outright. The next day, Bogdanovich angrily barged onto the set while munching on an egg sandwich and berated her.

In his account, Cher alleged that he tried to take command over every aspect of filmmaking, and furthermore, he demeaned her by labeling her as insignificant, going so far as to suggest erasing her scenes from the motion picture.

She remembered, “The following day, he stormed onto set with an egg sandwich in hand, declaring that he wouldn’t allow me to direct this movie; I was insignificant; he could dismiss me at any time. He certainly was a boorish character. He was rude to the actresses involved and exhibited extreme arrogance. I genuinely disliked him intensely.

However, the animosity between them was reciprocal. In an interview from 2019, Bogdanovich openly expressed that he found Cher to be a challenging actor for him to collaborate with. He pointed out her mistrust of men and inconsistency in character portrayal. To Vulture, he candidly admitted, “She can’t act. She won Best Actress at Cannes because I filmed her exceptionally well.

Despite the challenges, he never overlooked instances where he felt her true talent was highlighted, particularly in close-up shots. He explained to the media, “She’d initially take the right path, but she’d veer off course swiftly. Therefore, I focused on capturing many close-ups of her since she excels in such shots.

Cher’s autobiography, “Cher: The Memoir,” detailing her extensive professional journey spanning several decades along with insights into her personal life, is currently on sale. A sequel, to be titled “Cher: The Memoir Part II,” is scheduled for release in 2025.
