Charli XCX on Viral Kamala Harris Post: ‘Politics Doesn’t Feed My Art,’ Didn’t Expect It To ‘End Up on CNN’

As a dedicated follower of Charli XCX and her music, I find myself deeply inspired by her recent encounter with the viral post about Vice President Kamala Harris. Her journey, much like one of her hit songs, has been an unexpected rollercoaster ride that highlights the power of art and its influence on society.

In a recent chat with New York Magazine, the pop sensation Charli XCX talked about her feelings when her tweet about Vice President Kamala Harris became widely popular on social platforms. The 32-year-old musician admitted that she was taken aback by the extent of the attention her post generated and expressed that she hadn’t intended to make any political statement; rather, she shared something lighthearted and upbeat.

Following Charli XCX’s post on the platform previously known as Twitter with the phrase “Kamala IS brat,” it sparked a viral trend across social media. Many interpreted this statement as a show of support for Kamala Harris, given that President Joe Biden had endorsed her as the Democratic nominee for the 2024 presidential election. The phrase was likely referring to Charli XCX’s latest album titled “Brat,” which dropped in June 2024.

In a recent interview, Charli XCX clarified that her music doesn’t have a political undertone. She made it clear that she aims to keep her social media posts neutral and avoid being associated with any particular political party.

“She clarified that her music isn’t driven by politics. Instead, every aspect of her life – what she says, wears, thinks about, and enjoys – all influence and shape her artistic output.”

She expressed that she was taken aback by the massive attention her post received, as she had not anticipated it making headlines on popular news networks like CNN.

Regardless of her lack of political involvement, Charli XCX appeared to voice her opinions on democracy and women’s rights during this occasion. She emphasized the significance of standing with “democracy” and advocating for women’s rights.

Charli stated, “To be on the right side of democracy, the right side of women’s rights, is hugely important to me. I’m happy to help prevent democracy from failing forever.”

Instead, it’s important to note that Charli XCX has made clear that she doesn’t position herself as a political artist. She drew an analogy with Bob Dylan, renowned for his politically-driven music, to clarify that while her art may not be overtly political, it still carries significant meaning and influence.

“I’m not Bob Dylan, and I’ve never pretended to be,” she said.

Furthermore, following Xiao’s post, Kamala Harris adopted a similar bold style. The banner on Kamala HQ was then updated with a vibrant neon green background, reminiscent of Charli XCX’s album. Additionally, the new banner featured lowercase black letters, enhancing the connection to the pop star’s album design.
