Chappell Roan doesn’t hesitate to express herself beyond just her music. In a recent conversation with the BBC, published on January 19th, this pop star candidly discussed being branded as a ‘spoiled diva’ and experiencing criticism for voicing her opinions.
She mentioned that taking a stand against harassment and stalking, even extending to her parents’ residence, has presented obstacles for her.
She’s been reacting that way for my entire life in response to disrespect, but now there are cameras on me, and I also happen to be a popular singer. These two aspects of my life don’t align quite as they should, she pointed out, referencing a viral incident at the MTV Video Music Awards last September where she responded assertively to a photographer.
Chappell Roan, who is up for six Grammy Awards this year, including Best New Artist and Album of the Year, openly acknowledged that her vocal nature has impacted her career. In her words, “I believe I might have been even more successful if I was comfortable with keeping quiet like a muzzled animal.
If I suppressed or ignored my instinctive warnings that are telling me to halt, such as “Stop, stop, stop, you’re not okay,” I would grow stronger and larger. In fact, I would have continued with the tour if I had disregarded those feelings.
In October of 2024, Roan decided to postpone her tour temporarily so she could prioritize her wellbeing. Although this decision might affect her profession, she stays firm in her principles. She attributes her ability to rely on her intuition to the wisdom her late grandfather instilled in her.
Roan openly admitted that she isn’t hesitant to decline offers, including those that appear extraordinary or one-of-a-kind. She expressed her viewpoint: “Opportunities are never scarce. This notion constantly crosses my mind.
Drawing upon wisdom from her grandpa, she expressed, “When someone suggests, ‘Take this gig for the money, you won’t get such an offer again,’ it’s more like, so what? If I’m not feeling it at the moment, there are plenty of other opportunities available.
Roan expressed a blend of emotions regarding the accolade bestowed upon her, as she once referred to the Grammys as a platform for the more popular students. However, during her stint on A Carpool Karaoke Christmas special, she expressed joy and gratitude at being recognized by the Recording Academy. She further stated that it was an honor to be nominated alongside some of the other artists.
