Before releasing her debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, Chappell Roan attempted to make her mark on reality TV competitions. She showcased her talent at America’s Got Talent when she was 13 years old and on The Voice at the age of 15. Regrettably, none of these auditions resulted in any meaningful opportunities for the singer.
During an interview with W Magazine, Roan shared about her unsuccessful audition for The Voice, expressing her feelings of embarrassment when the show’s producer evaluated her singing abilities.
She stated, “The person watching or supposedly in charge didn’t even lift their gaze from their phone.” They simply replied, ‘OK, next.’ I then stepped up and performed an a cappella rendition of Rihanna’s ‘Stay’, which was absolutely terrifying. They hardly seemed to notice me at all.
Roan (formerly known as Kayleigh Rose Amstutz) attempted to showcase their talent on America’s Got Talent at the tender age of 13. Accompanied by family, they ventured to Austin, Texas, and endured long queues to perform Cyndi Lauper’s True Colors. Despite the effort, Roan didn’t advance to the next stage of the competition.
The 27-year-old artist effortlessly sports alternative styles often associated with drag. In 2017, she unveiled her first EP through Atlantic Records, but the reception was relatively mild. However, her debut album gained her a dedicated fan base, catapulting her into prominence.
In the year 2025, Roan claimed her inaugural Grammy in the Best New Artist category. During her heartfelt acceptance speech, she appealed to record labels by asking them to guarantee a livable income and healthcare benefits for artists, saying, “Record labels, you’ve got us on your roster, but do you have our backs?
Roan, who hails from Willard, Missouri, spent her childhood in a devoutly Christian household with a Naval Reservist father and a mother who was a nurse. At the tender age of 10, she took up playing the piano. Her first public performance occurred when she was just 13 years old, singing The Christmas Song at her school’s talent show.
At the age of fourteen, she began sharing self-recorded videos on YouTube, attracting the notice of music companies. Despite initial challenges in the music business, she eventually carved out a niche through her natural ability and dedication.
