Channing Tatum’s Latest Message to Ryan Reynolds is Touching & Showcases Determination: “I would kill kittens”

As a gamer who’s been following the Marvel Cinematic Universe for two decades, I can’t help but feel a sense of elation and nostalgia seeing Channing Tatum finally embody Gambit on the big screen. It’s like watching a childhood dream come to life, albeit with a bit of a delay.

In this new release from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Deadpool and Wolverine are taking center stage and breaking box office records. Some cherished live-action Marvel characters, such as Snipes’ Blade, Garner’s Elektra, and Evans’ Human Torch, have returned, but what sets this film apart is the opportunity it gives to a character who was originally intended for his own movie nearly two decades ago.

If you’ve been following Channing Tatum or the movie promotions, you’d know that Gambit only has a minor part in the film. At first glance, this may not seem important, but when you consider his backstory and the lengthy wait for Tatum to step into the role, it carries substantial significance.

For quite some time, Tatum and Gambit have been intertwined in a rich narrative. Actor Channing Tatum and his long-standing companion and producer, Reid Carolin, conceived a concept for a Gambit film that they proposed to 21st Century Fox.

They imagined it as a self-contained film akin to Deadpool, filled with humor and mature content. The Fox team appreciated the idea, but weren’t ready to fully approve it if either Tatum or Carolin were in charge, given their lack of experience in that position. Keen on bringing the movie to life, Tatum agreed to their conditions.

But, a turnaround occurred once Fox joined forces with Disney, leading to the termination of the Gambit project before it could progress any further.

After that point, there was no more information about Gambit until he showed up in Deadpool & Wolverine. Following the premiere of the movie, Tatum was lauded by many for his acting, leading fans to launch campaigns advocating for him to star in his own Marvel Cinematic Universe film.

Tatum has been unable to contain his excitement about his recent role, frequently thanking Ryan Reynolds for giving him this incredible opportunity.

In a recent interview with Jimmy Fallon, Tatum discussed various topics, from his heritage to how much playing Gambit means to him, sharing that he waited nearly 20 years for the chance to portray the character.

I could cry, actually, I get really emotional ’cause I’ve been trying to, like, actively in the industry play that character for the last 20 years. But I was like, in, I don’t know, third grade throwing playing cards at my friends in, like, the living room.

The performer added that the path to a standalone Gambit film has proven difficult and is likely to stay so until there’s a definitive plan for the character in relation to the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Initially, I dedicated around six years of my work to a project at Fox, striving to turn it into a standalone film. We were almost there, just inches away from production, when suddenly, Disney purchased Fox.

Similarly to Kevin, who is the head of Marvel Studios, I hold him in high regard. In fact, he once expressed that he adores Gambit but isn’t sure how to incorporate him into the current storyline just yet. He needs some time to carefully consider and plan how Gambit fits best.

In simpler terms, you could say, “Now we’ve made a small breakthrough, and ideally…” or “Now we’ve got a tiny glimpse into the solution, and I genuinely hope…” Instead of saying “I would kill kittens to make it happen,” you might express your determination as, “I’d go to great lengths to ensure that happens.

Additionally, Tatum showed appreciation yet again towards Ryan Reynolds for turning his long-held dream into a reality.

Ryan, let me remind you of something I’ve mentioned earlier… Here’s the thing, this field we’re in is truly captivating. Moreover, there isn’t another individual who embodies professionalism and genuine concern quite like him.

He brought Gambit back from apparent death, as if it had never been there, saying something like “No, buddy, this is what I need, this is what I want for the movie, and I want to witness it.” And he managed to make it a reality, and I’ll always be thankful to him. […] He truly embodies everything you could hope for.

It seems quite likely that Tatum will portray Gambit in a standalone movie or within the Marvel Cinematic Universe now that Deadpool and Wolverine have opened up a new chapter for mutants. Not to mention, there’s an upcoming live-action reboot on the horizon, so let’s all hope for the best!
