Channing Tatum “Prays to God” For a Standalone Gambit Movie: “It’s in Bob Iger and Kevin Feige’s hands”

As a seasoned gamer and long-time Marvel fanatic, I can’t help but feel a deep connection to Channing Tatum’s journey as Gambit. Having grown up with the X-Men comics and the iconic character of Remy LeBeau, it’s heartwarming to see Tatum’s passion for the role.

Channing Tatum is primarily recognized for starring in movies like ‘Magic Mike,’ ‘Step Up,’ and ’21 Jump Street.’ However, he recently stepped into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Gambit, a highly recognized X-Men character; a role he’s been keen to portray for close to a decade.

Channing Tatum has a deep affection for the character Gambit, so much so that Ryan Reynolds recently stated on social media, “Remy LeBeau is etched into his soul.” Whether you admired or criticized Tatum’s portrayal of Gambit, it’s clear that the moment to advocate for a solo film has arrived. This is particularly true given that mutants have been introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, and a live-action X-Men reboot is on the horizon.

Channing Tatum has had a lengthy association with the character Gambit, and together with his frequent collaborator and producer Reid Carolin, they came up with an idea to propose to 21st Century Fox – a solo Gambit film, intended to mirror the crude humor of Deadpool.

Despite expressing approval for the concept, the team at 21st Century Fox held reservations about moving forward with the project should it be led by either Carolin or Tatum as directors. In an interview with Variety, Tatum expressed his thoughts on this dilemma.

They wanted anybody but us, essentially, because we had never directed anything.

Tatum became so passionate about the project that he agreed to let someone else direct the movie.

Initially, the launch date was scheduled for March 2020. However, in the year 2017, Fox and Disney announced their merger. As a result, Disney assumed control over significant assets from 21st Century Fox, such as their movie and TV production studios, broadcast networks, and various business shares.

Regrettably, following the merger, The Gambit film was among the initial productions terminated, leaving Channing Tatum disheartened and unenthusiastic about exploring further Marvel roles. He expressed these emotions to Variety.

After Gambit left, I found myself deeply affected… I stopped watching Marvel productions. I haven’t managed to catch any of their films since then. He was my favorite character, and it was heartbreaking to see him go. It felt like losing a friend, as I had been eagerly anticipating portraying him.

Now that Channing Tatum has successfully introduced Gambit on the big screen, what’s in store for him next? In a recent conversation with Variety, Tatum mentioned that he’s had talks with executives from Disney and Marvel Studios. All that remains now is to keep his fingers crossed.

As a lifelong Marvel fan, I’ve been dreaming of seeing this particular storyline come to life on the big screen for over a decade now. It’s been my fervent wish, and I’ve vocalized it time and again. Now, with Bob Iger and Kevin Feige at the helm, I can only hope that they will bring this vision to fruition. I put my faith in them, just as I put my trust in the universe. Fingers crossed!

Recently, Tatum expressed gratitude on Instagram towards Reynolds for his industry support and significant role in bringing Gambit to reality.

Reflecting on a decade, I recall the day I watched Ryan unveil Deadpool 1 for the first time. I might’ve bolted backstage, giving him a heartfelt embrace and exclaiming, “You did it, man! It’s perfect!” We weren’t well-acquainted then, but Ryan has proven to be an unwavering ally in this gaming world.
