Channel 4 Announces Drama Slate Including ‘A Woman of Substance’ Remake

4 Channel has ordered a reboot of A Woman of Substance, their highest-rated drama to date. This decision comes shortly after the passing of the original author, Barbara Taylor Bradford.

Katherine Jakeways and Roanne Bardsley, known for their work on “The Buccaneers,” are penning the new adaptation of “A Woman of Substance.” This story revolves around Emma Harte, a maid from Yorkshire who rises to become one of the wealthiest women globally. The production company, The Forge, and Beth Willis, a former head of drama at Channel 4, are overseeing this remake.

Emma Harte, a determined and resourceful servant, strives to rise above her humble origins and ultimately becomes a powerful businesswoman and one of the wealthiest women globally.

40 years ago, the television show “A Woman of Substance,” featuring Jenny Seagrove, shattered viewership records with more than 14 million viewers tuning in. The upcoming remake is one of the new dramatic titles that Channel 4’s Ollie Madden is commissioning; he’s dedicated to breathing life into several fresh drama series.

As reported by Deadline, Madden stated that the goal at Channel 4 Drama is to create programs that stand out, shed light on British society in a thoughtful and innovative manner, all while remaining resolute in their aim to entertain.

Madden expressed his pride in unveiling a diverse collection of new projects, all sharing the same core values. Additionally, he expressed confidence that these works will resonate strongly with the public.

Beyond reading “A Woman of Substance,” I’m eagerly anticipating the upcoming dramas that have been approved for production. These include Caroline O’Donoghue’s TV adaptation of “The Rachel Incident,” Daisy Haggard’s “Maya,” the second season of Simon Pegg’s “The Undeclared War” by Peter Kosminsky, Gillian Anderson’s “Trespasses,” and the Margaret Thatcher series titled “Brian & Maggie.” There are more exciting projects in the pipeline as well.
