Tim Allen
Years before becoming famous on ‘Home Improvement’, comedian Tim Allen was arrested in 1978 at the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek airport with over 650 grams of cocaine. He faced a potential life sentence, but avoided it by giving authorities the names of other drug dealers. Allen ultimately served just over two years in federal prison in Sandstone, Minnesota, and upon his release in 1981, he began a career in stand-up comedy that eventually made him a well-known celebrity.
Danny Trejo
Before becoming a famous action movie star, this actor had a difficult past, spending much of the 1960s in California prisons like San Quentin, Folsom, and Soledad for crimes including armed robbery and drug offenses. While in prison, he became a skilled boxer and successfully completed a program to rehabilitate himself. He eventually transitioned into acting after being hired as a boxing trainer on the film ‘Runaway Train.’ His tough life experiences ultimately helped him land many roles playing strong, intimidating characters, like the one in ‘Machete’.
Mark Wahlberg
Before becoming a famous actor, Mark Wahlberg grew up in Boston and was involved in crime as a teenager. In 1988, he was arrested after attacking two men, initially charged with attempted murder, but the charge was later lessened. He was sentenced to two years in prison, but only served 45 days. Wahlberg has talked about this experience as a turning point that motivated him to change his life. He first achieved success with the music group Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, and later became a leading actor in films like ‘The Departed’.

I’ve always been fascinated by stories of transformation, and this actor’s life is one of the most incredible I’ve ever heard. He had a really tough upbringing, spending much of his youth in and out of trouble with the law. By 17, a street fight led to a manslaughter conviction and several years in prison. Even while inside, he kept facing challenges and ended up with another sentence for possessing a weapon. It was during a particularly isolating period – solitary confinement – that he discovered a book of plays. That’s what really changed everything! It sparked a passion for theater, and he actually started a drama group inside the Maryland House of Correction. After his release, he went on to study at the prestigious Yale School of Drama and eventually landed a starring role in the TV series ‘Roc’. It just goes to show you, people can truly turn their lives around.
Felicia Pearson
Felicia Pearson is best known for her compelling role as Snoop on the HBO series ‘The Wire.’ Her early life in Baltimore was incredibly challenging. At 14, she was convicted of second-degree murder and received two eight-year prison sentences, served consecutively. After six and a half years at the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women, she was released. A meeting with actor Michael K. Williams at a club unexpectedly led to an audition for ‘The Wire.’ Her realistic performance earned praise, with author Stephen King later naming her character one of television’s most frightening villains.
50 Cent
Growing up in Queens, this hip-hop executive and producer became involved with drugs as a teenager. In 1994, he was arrested for selling cocaine to an undercover police officer and faced additional charges related to heroin and crack cocaine. Instead of going to a traditional prison, he spent six months in a tough, military-style boot camp where he earned his GED and developed his passion for hip-hop. He later drew on his personal experiences to create his first album and the film ‘Get Rich or Die Tryin’.
