CBS Cancels Spinoffs of The Equalizer and The Neighborhood; Details Inside

CBS has officially canceled their plans for spinoffs of The Equalizer and The Neighborhood, as reported by Variety on April 22. This decision is part of a wider restructuring of CBS’s programming schedule for the 2025-2026 television season.

In an April 20 episode of the original series, a new spinoff titled “The Equalizer” was introduced, featuring Titus Welliver and Juani Feliz in leading roles. Welliver took on the character of Hudson Reed, a former CIA agent with a complex history, while Feliz portrayed his daughter Samantha, who is an expert in weapons and martial arts and holds secrets of her own. The storyline aimed to broaden the universe of the franchise, but unfortunately, it will not extend beyond its debut appearance.

Simultaneously, a spin-off series was planned to focus on beloved characters Marty and Malcolm Butler (portrayed by Marcel Spears and Sheaun McKinney), who were venturing into a new chapter in Venice Beach. Since the original show had been renewed for an eighth and last season, the cancellation of the spin-off signifies the conclusion of the Butler brothers’ story arc.

Furthermore, CBS decided against moving forward with the comedy pilot titled “Zarna,” created by comedian Zarna Garg. Additionally, they’ve ended “Poppa’s House” after just one season.

Meanwhile, CBS is progressing with various upcoming shows. Among them are a new installment of the FBI series featuring Tom Ellis, the drama pilot Einstein starring Matthew Gray Gubler, and a comedy titled DMV. Additionally, they have approved the Fire Country spinoff Sheriff Country and the Blue Bloods spinoff Boston Blue for production.

As CBS prepares to create its next round of programming, the cancellations of “The Equalizer” and “The Neighborhood” spinoffs indicate a shift in strategy towards creating new content and broadening existing franchises. Although some tales are drawing to a close prematurely, the network’s upcoming lineup offers innovative stories and recognizable characters in unexpected roles.
