Director Rob Reiner, best known for films like The Princess Bride, and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead at their home on December 14, 2025. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner ruled their deaths a homicide, caused by multiple stab wounds. They were last seen alive the night before, on December 13th.
Police discovered the bodies of a couple at their home in Brentwood, Los Angeles, on Sunday afternoon. According to The New York Times, their daughter, Romy, found her father’s body when she entered the house. Her roommate then called 911. When officers arrived, they also found the body of the other parent.
On Monday, the Los Angeles Police Department announced that their 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, was responsible for the deaths. He had been arrested around 9:15 p.m. the previous Sunday in Exposition Park, Los Angeles, and was in custody by 5 a.m. Monday. Authorities stated that he did not resist arrest.
By Tuesday, Nick was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, as well as additional charges for multiple deaths and using a weapon – a knife. If convicted, he faces either life in prison without the possibility of release, or the death penalty. He appeared in court on Wednesday and waived his right to an initial hearing.
The defendant’s legal team didn’t address the question of his guilt, and the judge ordered him held in jail without bond until his next court date on January 7, 2026.
It absolutely breaks my heart to hear about Romy and Jake Reiner losing their parents, Rob and Michele. They shared a statement with PEOPLE, and honestly, it was just devastating. They said no words can express the pain they’re going through, and that losing their parents – who were also their best friends – is something no one should ever experience. They were so touched by all the support and kindness everyone has shown, not just from those who knew them, but from people everywhere. They’ve asked for privacy and compassion during this incredibly difficult time, and just want their parents to be remembered for the wonderful lives they lived and all the love they gave. It’s just a really sad story, and my heart goes out to them.
Tracy Reiner, Rob Reiner’s daughter from his first marriage to Penny Marshall, recently spoke about the news. She told NBC News that she felt incredibly lucky to have come from such a wonderful family, and expressed her shock and disbelief. “I don’t know what to say. I’m in shock,” she said.
On Tuesday, a group of Rob and Michele’s friends and colleagues shared a message remembering them. It described them as a uniquely powerful couple – energetic, giving, and truly inspiring – and expressed how much they would be missed.
