Catharine O’Hara’s Shocking Role in The Last of Us Season 2 Revealed!

In contrast to The Last of Us Part II video game, HBO’s hit series The Last of Us dedicated significant attention to mental health in its season two premiere. Let’s delve into the intriguing character of Catherine O’Hara’s Gail, a psychotherapist from Jackson, Wyoming, who stands out for her intelligence and bluntness. She also has an unconventional method of accepting payment – pot. In the first episode of The Last of Us season two, titled “Future Days,” we learned more about Gail’s character and her role within the commune. There is also a question as to why she holds a grudge against Joel. Here’s what we currently know about Gail in The Last of Us so far.

What is Gail’s Job at the Commune on The Last of Us?

Catherine O’Hara plays a character named Gail who is a psychotherapist, not a psychiatrist. She continues to work within the commune in Jackson, and it appears that she has many clients. When Joel tells Dina he can’t be accountable for another person’s emotional wellbeing in the first episode of The Last of Us season two, Gail is the one who comes to mind.

It’s quite obvious that Gail is sharp-witted and excels in her work. She had a sense that Joel was concealing something from her during his treatment, but he didn’t end up confessing fully to her about it.

In “The Last of Us” season two, Gail doesn’t offer her services out of kindness or without charge. Instead, for each hour-long session, she requests payment in cannabis. Since there’s no licensing board to answer to, she can even consume alcohol on duty, as demonstrated during Joel’s session in the first episode of season two when she did so for a particular reason.

Why Was Gail Sad During Her Session With Joel on The Last of Us?

In the debut of the second season of “The Last of Us”, Joel attended a celebration on Gail’s birthday, marking her first such occasion without her husband Eugene in 41 years. Despite not delving deep into Eugene’s character, we know he was capable of growing mature plants anytime of year, even amidst the chaos of a post-apocalyptic world teeming with monsters. On this particular day, Gail deeply mourned his absence and resorted to drinking to cope. It is important to note that Eugene is a character from “The Last of Us—Part II” game. While there was limited information about him in the games, the backstory presented in season two of “The Last of Us” offers fresh insights.

Visiting Joel at her late husband’s residence did not improve matters, as it was Joel who had taken Eugene’s life.

Why Did Joel Kill Eugene on The Last of Us and Why Does Gail Hate Him for It?

In my own words, as a movie buff:

After downing a few drinks, I mustered the courage to speak up during the premiere of The Last of Us season two, something I’d been too afraid to express before. I found the strength (thanks to that liquid courage) because, as I put it, “You can’t truly heal unless you have the bravery to voice your feelings out loud.” What followed was a harsh truth between Joel and me, a truth that seemed to echo a past event so terrible, it left both of us scarred.

You took my husband’s life, and I can’t help but harbor intense hatred towards you for it. Yes, I understand that you had no other option. I know I should find it within myself to forgive you. Yet, I just can’t. The way it happened still haunts me, and seeing you here, in our home, only fuels my anger.

It’s not difficult to understand why Joel might have been forced to take a life from the commune, given that Eugene likely contracted cordyceps. However, what remains unclear is the reason behind Joel’s violent method of killing Eugene, making it so reprehensible that Gail expressed her dislike for Joel even to her own patient.

But despite that, Gail is a professional. She still wants to help Joel with his Ellie problem.

If Ellie discovers that Joel’s supposed act of saving her actually condemned everyone, including Eugene, to live in a world dominated by cordyceps, it might make her feel quite differently about the situation. If Joel ever chooses to reveal this truth to her, he should probably stock up on plenty of marijuana for the ensuing conversation.

Catherine O’Hara’s Gail in The Last of Us Season 2

Anticipation builds as we eagerly look forward to more of Catherine O’Hara’s character, Gail, in the ongoing season 2 of “The Last of Us.” The specifics of her role haven’t been revealed yet, but given her quick entrance, it seems likely that she’ll make another appearance. Here’s hoping so!
