Now, listen closely, because this is about money, and money, my dears, is a rather peculiar beast. There are two companies, see, Caterpillar and Okta, that are shaping up to be rather splendid investments for the next ten years. They’ve stumbled, quite by accident, into the world of Artificial Intelligence – a sort of mechanical brain business – but they’re clever enough to have other tricks up their sleeves, which is always a sensible precaution.
These aren’t cheap, mind you. The clever sorts have already sniffed out the potential, like pigs rooting for truffles. But there’s still a chance to jump in before the real cash starts pouring in, like a chocolate waterfall.
Caterpillar: Building Blocks and Buzzing Bits
Caterpillar, a name that conjures images of enormous, rumbling machines, is benefiting from this AI business in two rather clever ways. First, all these AI brains need somewhere to live, and that means building enormous data centers. Caterpillar builds the things that build those centers. Second, those centers gobble up electricity like greedy monsters, and Caterpillar provides the power, with turbines and engines that hum and whir like contented bees.
They just had a rather good year, reporting a whopping $67.6 billion in revenue – a four percent jump! Their Power & Energy division, the one supplying all this buzzing electricity, saw sales leap a glorious 23 percent. It’s like they’ve discovered a golden goose!
There was a slight wobble, a bit of a dip in profit per share (down 14.6 percent), due to some rather nasty incremental costs, including tariffs – a sort of tax on being sensible. But don’t let that bother you too much.
They’ve got a backlog of orders, a mountain of work, totaling $51.2 billion! They’ve just landed a deal with American Intelligence and Power to supply enough power for a whole new computing campus in West Virginia, all by 2027. It’s enough to make a grown man grin.
And then there are the self-driving trucks. These aren’t your ordinary trucks, you see. They’re autonomous, meaning they drive themselves! Perfect for mines, where it’s rather dangerous, or construction sites where finding a skilled worker is like searching for a unicorn. They’re even building self-driving excavators and loaders – marvelous contraptions!
The company’s stock has climbed a rather impressive 119 percent over the past year. It’s trading at around 41 times earnings, which sounds a bit steep, but for a company with this much AI potential, it’s a bargain. And they’ve been raising their dividend for 32 years – a steady drip of sweetness for shareholders.
Okta: Keeping the Digital Goblins at Bay
Now, Okta is a different sort of beast altogether. They’re in the cybersecurity business, which is all about keeping the digital goblins at bay. They ensure that only the right people can access data and software, with a system of constant verification. It’s like having a very strict bouncer at the door of your digital castle.
Okta’s stock has had a bit of a wobble lately, down 9.4 percent over the past year. Their growth has slowed, and they’re facing competition from the likes of Microsoft and CrowdStrike – rather large and imposing rivals. But don’t write them off just yet.
Their finances are still strong. They’re forecasting revenue of around $2.9 billion for next year, an 11 percent increase, and earnings per share of $3.43 to $3.44. Not bad, not bad at all.
Some folks think AI will spell the end for software companies, but that’s nonsense. What’s not being emphasized is that Okta is becoming a leader in securing these AI agents, ensuring data can travel safely between applications. They’ve created something called the Identity Security Fabric – a rather clever name, don’t you think?
They had a bit of a scare in 2023 when their support system was breached, but they’ve learned from their mistakes. Now, they’re using AI to fight AI-generated hacks. Their Identity Threat Protection uses artificial intelligence to detect suspicious behavior and lock out fraudulent bots. It’s like fighting fire with fire, only much more complicated.
