In 1977, the characters of Judge Dredd were introduced by writers John Wagner and artist Carlos Ezquerra, initially in the British anthology series called 2000 AD. This publication also provided a launching pad for notable writers such as Alan Moore, Grant Morrison, and Garth Ennis. Set in the dystopian future metropolis of Mega-City One, Judge Joseph Dredd is a law enforcer who has the authority to serve as judge, jury, and executioner. The stories portrayed satirical commentary on society, making them strikingly relevant even today.

Since 2016, DiCaprio has been trying to produce a feature film based on that property. The script was written by Jono Matt and Glen Powell, who you may recognize from other projects. Originally, this project was with Paramount Pictures. However, unfortunately, the movie never came to fruition. Eventually, the rights to the property reverted back to Warner Bros, who had acquired the Turner catalog long ago.
