Just like villains are a key part of horror, so are the main characters they are pursuing. And, when it comes to the genre and all of its subsets, no trope is more prevalent and enduring than the Final Girl. A term coined by Carol J. Clover in “Her Body, Himself: Gender in the Slasher Film” (1987), the Final Girl is the apple of a killer’s eye. She’s the ultimate survivor and audience surrogate who lives through the final showdown with the big bad. 

It’s surprising that many satirical comedy shows haven’t made it to the big screen like Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night.” However, “SNL” isn’t your average sketch comedy series. Now in its 50th season, it’s more than just a TV show – it’s a television icon. Countless talented writers and actors have kick-started their careers on this show. Additionally, “Saturday Night” isn’t the first time “SNL” has influenced a full-length film. In fact, we’re well into double digits when it comes to movies based on “SNL.

As a dedicated follower, I can’t help but express my admiration for Margot Robbie’s spellbinding portrayal of Harley Quinn, our beloved DC antiheroine, in Suicide Squad (2016), Birds of Prey (2020), and The Suicide Squad (2021). Yet, the Joker: Folie à Deux film, starring Joaquin Phoenix and directed by Todd Phillips, brought Lady Gaga into the iconic role.

Since 2019, a Green Lantern series has been under development with plans to feature various members of the intergalactic Green Lantern Corps. However, the final version of an HBO Green Lantern series has now emerged as part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s strategy for the on-screen DC Universe. They revealed a new DC television show titled Lanterns, which will be a live-action Green Lantern entry within the DCU. The cast includes Hal Jordan and John Stewart. According to the DC creators, this series will present a mystery similar to True Detective, where our two Lanterns investigate a terrestrial mystery that unfolds into the larger story. Essentially, it’s an ancient horror found on Earth, with Hal Jordan and John Stewart serving as supercops in what they call “Precinct Earth.” In this series, Aaron Pierre from the Netflix film Rebel Ridge will play the role of John Stewart, with James Gunn expressing his congratulations to the actor via social media.

In the game The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, there’s an abundance of urban areas and smaller communities waiting to be discovered. The island of Vvardenfell offers a wealth of intriguing locations to delve into, ranging from Ashlander Camps to grand cities. Many of the most memorable towns in the entire Elder Scrolls series left a lasting impression on players through Morrowind.

Casting is so important when it comes to iconic characters, naturally. It can make the difference between “Okay, we’ll see” and “Holy crap I’m so excited.” With the latest casting announcement for Max’s upcoming DC Studios series Lanterns, I’m definitely in the latter category. After already casting Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, DC announced Aaron Pierre will costar as young Green Lantern John Stewart. Pierre had my personal vote for a while now. This only solidified after his outstanding turn in Jeremy Saulnier’s Netflix thriller Rebel Ridge.

Ian McKellen’s portrayal of Gandalf in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings will remain deeply ingrained in people’s hearts and the annals of on-screen Gandalf performances. He is the sole actor from Tolkien’s film adaptations to have been nominated for an Oscar. Additionally, McKellen is one of the select actors who reprised their role as Gandalf in Peter Jackson’s trilogy of The Hobbit films.
