For months, there have been whispers online about a possible return to theaters of the very first Star Wars film. This started when a beautifully restored print of the original movie was discovered and shown in the U.K. last year. It’s likely this is the same version we’ll see in cinemas, though it may have undergone even more restoration for wider release. For years, George Lucas maintained he’d never release his original cut, believing it wasn’t his ideal vision. He even used the tagline “The original, one last time” when the trilogy was released on VHS in 1995. However, it seems that might not have been the final release after all.

Disney is bringing Avengers: Endgame back to theaters on September 25, 2026, according to The Hollywood Reporter. This is about two months before the release of Avengers: Doomsday on December 18, 2026. It’s unclear how long Endgame will be shown, but even a brief re-release could allow it to become the highest-grossing film of all time again. Endgame previously surpassed Avatar in box office revenue, but Avatar regained the top spot after a re-release of its own. Currently, Avatar leads Endgame by a little over $124 million.
