FromSoftware’s Nightreign was bound to be intriguing, given their knack for incorporating multiplayer aspects into their games. However, a standalone multiplayer journey represents an entirely new challenge for the developer.
In simpler terms, Nightreign offers a compact, fast-paced version of the Elden Ring adventure, filled with battles against diverse enemies, gear collection for power-ups, and survival challenges. Each playthrough, or expedition, lasts approximately 45 minutes and ends in a battle with a formidable boss. At the onset, players can select from five character classes, called Nightfarers, each with unique abilities and stat distributions. Two additional classes can be unlocked as you progress. As a Nightfarer, your mission is to embark on expeditions to vanquish the Nightlords and halt the encroaching Night, which threatens to annihilate the world.
I’ve tried out Elden Ring Nightreign on three different devices: my updated Steam Deck OLED running the latest public OS build, the Steam Deck LCD on the Steam preview channel, and ROG Ally. I also played the game individually, joined matches via online connectivity, and set up a private lobby to ensure that the multiplayer functionality operates correctly on Steam Deck.
Initially, it took me a few initial hours to fully grasp Elden Ring: Nightreign’s concept – work together with two other players, choose among eight Nightfarer characters, embark on a three-day Expedition where we fight enemies to gather runes, weapons, and blessings to help us defeat the final powerful antagonist. However, after managing to triumph over Gladius, the three-headed infernal wolf and the first Night Lord, I found myself eager to confront the remaining challenges head-on.
