I was revisiting the 2003 rom-com the other day, and it’s packed with familiar faces and a bunch of different stories going on. It’s funny – I recently learned something a little strange about the cast. Keira Knightley and Thomas Brodie-Sangster, who both appear in the movie, never actually share any screen time together. But what’s even more surprising is that they’re only five years apart in age! It’s one of those little movie facts that always gets me thinking.

A Star Wars fan shared a photo online, on the Reddit forum r/StarWars, of an impressive replica they built. The replica is a tall, black KX-series security droid with glowing eyes and moving limbs. It’s almost as tall as the room it’s in, and the fan, u/StevelKanevel, posted the picture to show it off.

Disney received criticism and internal pushback after initially removing a quick kiss between two female characters in the film Lightyear. Employees protested the decision, especially in light of the company’s position on inclusive laws, and the kiss was later reinstated. However, this led to the film being banned in more than a dozen countries in the Middle East and Asia. The scene itself was meant to show the passage of time and highlight the family history of one of the main characters.

Let me tell you about “Abbott Elementary.” Quinta Brunson is absolutely fantastic as Janine Teagues, a teacher at a Philadelphia public school, and the show follows her and her colleagues in this really funny, documentary-style comedy. It’s all about the everyday struggles teachers face – the lack of funding, the weird bosses – but it focuses on the humor in those situations, and how they still manage to help their kids. What I really appreciate is that Janine stays positive even when things are tough, and we get to see her grow both personally and professionally, all without getting bogged down in overly dramatic or traumatic storylines. It’s a genuinely heartwarming show that beautifully celebrates the dedication and joy of Black educators – it’s a breath of fresh air.

A popular British show made history when its main character, the Doctor, transformed into a woman for the very first time. Jodie Whittaker took on the role, changing the character forever. This change showed that Time Lords don’t have fixed genders like humans do, and their bodies can change in surprising ways. The show then explored how the universe treated the Doctor differently now that she appeared as a woman.

This crime comedy, written and directed by Eddie Murphy, brought together three comedy icons: Richard Pryor and Redd Foxx. The film centers on a speakeasy owner and his son as they deal with a crooked cop and a dangerous gangster. While reviews at the time pointed out problems with the story and a slow pace, the incredible chemistry between Murphy, Pryor, and Foxx kept audiences entertained. Today, the movie is remembered more for its witty back-and-forth conversations than its actual plot.

The casting of Zoe Saldana as Nina Simone sparked controversy due to concerns about colorism and the filmmakers’ choice to alter her skin tone and use a prosthetic nose. The Simone family publicly disapproved of the film, and the makeup choices became a major source of criticism. Many argued that a darker-skinned actress, with features more similar to Simone’s, should have been cast. This controversy ultimately drew more attention than the film itself, impacting its release and promotion.

Hulu’s new series reimagines the character Rob from the original story as a bisexual record store owner living in Brooklyn. The show follows Rob’s romantic life, focusing on five major heartbreaks with both men and women. Starring Zoë Kravitz, the series keeps the original’s strong focus on music, but tells the story through the lens of queer dating. It uses curated playlists and direct addresses to the audience to help viewers understand Rob’s personality and background.

Julie Dash’s film featured a Gullah family spanning multiple generations, and she intentionally cast actresses with darker skin tones, including Cora Lee Day and Barbara-O. The movie highlighted natural hair and skin tones, avoiding artificial lighting or skin-lightening techniques. This commitment to representing darker complexions in the film’s promotional materials was unusual for the time. The film went on to inspire the visual style of later music videos and films that also centered on the beauty of darker-skinned women.
