Cate Blanchett Reveals ‘No One Got Paid’ For Doing Lord Of The Rings; ‘Basically Got Free…’

As a seasoned lifestyle expert with an eye for Hollywood history and a knack for unveiling intriguing behind-the-scenes tales, I must say Cate Blanchett‘s recent revelation about Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy left me utterly astounded. The fact that one of the most iconic figures in modern cinema history, who has graced our screens with her mesmerizing presence for decades, was barely compensated for playing a pivotal role in such an epic saga is truly mind-boggling.

Cate Blanchett refuted allegations that she and others were adequately compensated in Peter Jackson’s trilogy, The Lord of the Rings. In an episode of Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live, Blanchett appeared on the show “Plead the Fifth,” where host Andy Cohen asks three difficult questions, allowing guests to dodge one.

In a conversation, Cohen inquired from Blanchett about the film role that earned her the most money. The actress from Borderlands playfully suggested Cohen take a guess, and he hypothesized it was Lord of the Rings. To this, Blanchett joked, “Don’t make me laugh! No one received any payment for doing that movie.”

When Cohen inquired about Cate Blanchett’s portion of the film’s box office revenues, she responded, “No, that was long before any of that.” As for why she decided to join the movie, Blanchett mentioned her interest in collaborating with the director who created Braindead, a 1992 zombie comedy later known as Dead Alive in the U.S. when it was released there.

As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but gush over Cate Blanchett’s enchanting portrayal of Galadriel, the regal elf with formidable magical prowess, in Peter Jackson’s epic Lord of the Rings trilogy. This talented actress revisited her role in the director’s Hobbit film series, a prequel to my beloved Lord of the Rings. When asked about her compensation, she playfully remarked, “I essentially got free sandwiches and got to keep my [elf] ears!” Such is the life of a dedicated artist immersed in Middle-earth!

A number of actors from The Lord of the Rings movies, such as Cate Blanchett, have voiced concerns about their relatively low pay for the blockbuster fantasy series. In an interview on The Howard Stern Show in 2019, Orlando Bloom, who portrays Legolas across all three films, disclosed that he earned just $175,000 for the entire trilogy. With a staggering global box office gross of over $2.9 billion, The Lord of the Rings film series ranks among the most profitable movie trilogies ever made.
