Castlevania Revival Announced For 40th Anniversary With ‘Belmont’s Curse’

The doors of Castlevania are opening once again.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the original 1986 game, Konami is bringing back the classic Castlevania series. They’ve launched a redesigned website and a new official X (formerly Twitter) account to share updates, announcements, and details about a range of new Castlevania products.

The latest game in the Castlevania series, a 2D action-exploration title called Belmont’s Curse, is now available. Find more information below.

Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse Revealed

The new game, Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, takes place 23 years after Castlevania: Dracula’s Curse and stars a young descendant of Trevor Belmont.

The story shifts to Paris in 1499, a city engulfed in flames and terrorized by monstrous creatures emerging from the darkness. A new Belmont, wielding the famous Vampire Killer whip, takes to the streets and a foreboding castle to halt the invasion and rescue the city.

Konami is teaming up with game studios Evil Empire and Motion Twin – both known for creating exciting 2D action games – to create a new game that builds on the classic franchise’s focus on exploration, but with a modern feel.

The tagline reads: “Crimson Curse — Will Your Fate Bloom in Despair or Salvation.”

The game is currently slated for a 2026 release.

Whip-Driven Combat Returns

The Vampire Killer is front and center.

As a huge fan of the series, I’m really excited about what Belmont’s Curse is bringing to the table with its whip mechanics. It sounds like they’ve gone way beyond just hitting enemies from afar! From what I’ve seen, you’ll be able to really swing around like you’re on a trapeze, using the whip for movement and pulling off some seriously stylish moves in combat. It looks like mastering the timing and using the whip for mobility will be just as important as actually hitting things – and that’s a fantastic change!

Battles won’t just be about using the whip. Players will have many different weapons and skills to choose from, so they’ll need to think carefully about how to approach each fight.

The game brings back beloved Castlevania features like hidden rooms and collectibles, challenging puzzles, dangerous traps, and both friendly and formidable characters.

The developers emphasize that success will require brains as much as brute force.

A New Gothic Art Style

Belmont’s Curse builds on the series’ classic, spooky atmosphere but features a vibrant new art style. It keeps the familiar dark castles and frightening monsters, but with a modern look designed for today’s gaming systems.

The game seems to combine the traditional elements of Castlevania with modern 2D art and design.

The classic game Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is now available on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam.

The game is scheduled for release in 2026. An official rating has not yet been announced.
