In the second and final season of the series Andor, we find ourselves saying goodbye to Diego Luna’s character Cassian, a renowned spy and soldier in the Rebellion’s history. Unfortunately, he spends a significant portion of this last season, approximately one-sixth, trapped in a jungle with some particularly exasperating individuals from across the galaxy. The question arises: who were these people, and why were they on this planet? More crucially, what was the purpose behind Cassian’s presence there? This article aims to explore Cassian’s journey during the first three episodes of Andor‘s second season, its implications for the overall story, and why this particular narrative arc didn’t quite meet the mark—neither a complete success nor a total failure.
How Did Cassian End Up Trapped in the Jungle in Andor Season 2?
In the second season premiere of Andor, Cassian Andor pilfered a prototype TIE Interceptor from an Imperial facility, disguising himself as a test pilot within the Sienar Test Facility. A fresh recruit in the Rebellion was on standby to assist him. However, his departure from the planet didn’t go exactly according to plan, given that he was unfamiliar with flying the spacecraft. Upon escaping the planet, he touched down on an unnamed world (later revealed as a well-known locale in Star Wars). He had left his own vessel behind, intending to deliver the stolen TIE fighter to someone named Porko.
Porko was dead before Cassian arrived. The people who killed him then took Cassian hostage.
Who Held Cassian Prisoner in the Jungle on Andor Season 2?
In the early episodes of Andor‘s second season, a disorganized band of remaining Maya Pei insurgents seized Cassian. These insurgents doubted his claim of being a Rebel agent. Since they didn’t possess a spaceship, they decided to keep him alive until their pilot could possibly learn how to operate the TIE fighter. With no other options for escaping the planet, this was their only chance.
As I stood stranded on this barren planet for the past two days, my companions and I were growing increasingly desperate and hungry. My brother Bardi had taken our ship to seek help after a disastrous skirmish on another world, leaving us behind. Some said he abandoned us, while others defended his actions.
Tensions within our group escalated, eventually splitting us into two factions: one led by Gerdis, the other myself. As days turned into nights and back again, anger and mistrust festered among us like an unhealed wound. Eventually, these emotions boiled over, leading to a tragic outburst of violence that left us all scarred.
Did Cassian Really Know Maya Pei?
Cassian cleverly manipulated one of the less intelligent members from the Maya Pei Bridage to disclose their faction’s name. This individual was particularly dim-witted, making the accomplishment even more impressive. Once he had the information, Cassian declared that he was aware of them and that they were all part of the same Rebellion. He further added that his unnamed group had been providing them with supplies since Maya was a “customer.
As a film enthusiast, I find myself pondering over Cassian’s honesty. While I lean towards disbelief, there’s always a slim chance he was truthful. His ability to keep us guessing is a clear sign of his expertise as a masterful spy and manipulator.
How Did Cassian Escape from the Maya Pei Brigade in Andor Season 2?
Given their predicament – a mysterious beast lurking in the unexplored jungle devouring members from both factions, and no viable escape route – the two warring groups resolved to resolve their power struggle through an unusual means: a game of “Space Rock-Paper-Scissors”, also known as “Five Fingers”.
Almost everyone set aside their weapons and participated in a game instead, which Cassian cleverly exploited by revealing a concealed blaster from his crashed ship. He swiftly dashed towards the TIE fighter, utilizing it as an escape vehicle. Moreover, he received assistance from a fearsome creature during a thrilling sequence of Galactic Rock-Paper-Scissors, ensuring that Star Wars enthusiasts would never again witness the Maya Pei Brigade in action.
What Was the Point of Cassian’s Story in the First Two Episodes of Andor Season Two?
Rebellions aren’t always grand, glorious battles against formidable adversaries. Sometimes they involve dealing with the most inept individuals across the galaxy. However, these seemingly insignificant encounters are crucial because if you can’t outwit minor groups like the Maya Pei Brigade, you won’t stand a chance against the Empire. Cassian had to use all his skills as a spy and soldier to navigate such situations, which might not seem impressive, but Porko couldn’t manage it. He won’t be there to assist in stealing the Death Star plans like we know Cassian will.
In essence, the series Andor delves into the intricacies of orchestrating a Rebellion and standing up against an apparently invincible adversary. It’s all about the finer details, the day-to-day grind, the years of perseverance, and the countless unsung heroes who make Luke Skywalker’s heroics achievable. Occasionally, this persistence involves overcoming preposterous circumstances engineered by well-meaning individuals who lack the know-how to accomplish anything, such as collecting rainwater when there’s no drinking water available. Sometimes, even the galaxy’s top spy is delayed by the galaxy’s least effective rebels. How a character like Cassian manages these situations isn’t just significant; it’s illuminating, and in this way, Cassian’s journey in the first two episodes of Andor‘s second season resonated deeply with the show’s underlying themes.
What Didn’t Work About Cassian’s Arc in Andor Season 2’s First Two Episodes?
Andor remains a TV series, but presenting us with the absolute most grating interpretation of cosmic Waiting for Godot across two episodes was indeed irritating. The characters Gerdis and Bardi (or is it Bardi and Gerdis?) are by far the most exasperating rendition of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern ever portrayed on screen. Most instances where Cassian interacted with these bickering duos felt monotonous and insignificant within the broader context of Andor‘s second season, despite the narrative arc having a thematic rationale.
If this subplot had been spread across fewer episodes during the finale of such an outstanding TV series, it might not have felt as frustrating. Had it been part of season two instead, a five-season series, it would have seemed more fitting. We could have enjoyed the entire storyline rather than longing for its conclusion.
The discovery that Cassian’s experiences during the early episodes of Andor’s second season occurred on Yavin 4 didn’t quite justify the time we had to endure being there. The valiant acts he performed, like stealing the TIE fighter at the beginning of the season and saving his friends in episode three, just made his prolonged predicament all the more tedious.
Andor sensibly positioned its protagonist in a rather frustrating predicament, keeping Cassian among the overly irritating individuals for an extended period of time, which was unnecessary.
*Gerdis had the beard, but the important thing is that it doesn’t matter.
Mikey Walsh, a staff writer at TopMob, found himself admiring Porko’s work and wishing he could match his success. You can keep up with him on Bluesky under the handle @burgermike, or wherever people are ranking the Targaryen kings.
