As a seasoned action thriller enthusiast, who has seen more than my fair share of holiday romance fluff that leaves me longing for something with a bit more edge, I can confidently say that “Carry On” is right up my alley! The trailer alone had me on the edge of my seat, and the prospect of Jason Bateman in a black leather jacket and baseball cap is enough to make any action junkie’s heart race.
Instead of holiday romance films leaving you unimpressed? Then Netflix has an exciting action thriller just for you this season! Titled “Carry On,” the movie takes place in an airport and revolves around a cunning traveler, portrayed by Jason Bateman, who harbors secret intentions. He manipulates a young TSA agent (playing the role of Taron Egerton) to help him smuggle a potentially hazardous item through security.
The trailer starts with the introduction of Bateman’s character as he enters a shop selling Christmas trees in a black leather jacket and baseball cap and leaves after setting a dead body on fire. “There’s people in control, and there’s people that listen. I’m the guy you listen to,” Bateman says in voiceover.
In this scenario, the young TSA employee named Ethan (Egerton) stumbles upon an odd earpiece and overhears a covert instruction from a traveler. The traveler then extorts Ethan by threatening to harm his girlfriend if he doesn’t approve a potentially hazardous bag that has passed through security screening. He menacingly states, “One bag for one life; all you have to do is look the other way.
Besides portraying a criminal act, the movie appears to conceal a deeper narrative that challenges societal norms and delves into the repercussions of challenging those very same norms.
Besides Egerton and Bateman, Sofia Carson, Danielle Deadwyler, Sinqua Walls, Logan Marshall-Green, Theo Rossi, Josh Brener, and Dean Norris complete the roster for the cast.
Director Dan Collet-Serra, famed for movies like Jungle Cruise and Black Adam, helmed this production. He’s not only the director but also part of the executive producing team, which includes Holly Bario, Brian Williams, Seth William Meier, Scott Greenberg, and Dylan Clark – all taking on producer roles as well.
In a recent conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Egerton — acclaimed for his performance as Elton John in Rocketman — teased his character’s mindset in Carry On. “He’s unhappy at work at the airport and feeling flat and dejected about it,” he added.
Even as I strive to be a reliable provider and loving father for my unborn child with Carson, I find myself grappling with an overwhelming sense of emptiness. Yet, in these challenging circumstances, I see it as a significant opportunity for personal growth. As the actor put it, “This is a massive chance for him to rise above.
Carry On will be released on Netflix on December 13.
