As a seasoned observer of the country music scene and a connoisseur of legendary artists, I must say that Toby Keith’s tribute concert, Toby Keith: American Icon, is a testament to the enduring influence and indelible mark he left on the genre. Having had the privilege of witnessing Carrie Underwood grace stages across the globe, I can attest to her exceptional talent and ability to pay homage in a way that resonates with fans.
Fans find it uniquely touching when one esteemed artist pays tribute to another through their exceptional music, particularly during live performances. For instance, Carrie Underwood is set to pay tribute to the late Toby Keith.
In the upcoming NBC concert special Toby Keith: American Icon, Underwood will kick off the performances with a rendition of “A Little Less Talk and a Lot More Action”, and PEOPLE has shared an exclusive sneak peek at her act.
At Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, the singer addressed the crowd by saying, “Everyone’s here for one special reason – this extraordinary man.” As a huge image of Keith emerged behind her, Underwood – fresh from announcing her return as an American Idol judge – had the audience swaying to a 1993 hit of Keith’s, which was included on his self-titled debut album.
Toby Keith, famously known as Legend, passed away from stomach cancer in February at the age of 62. Earlier this year, his family announced his death via social media. According to a statement, he peacefully departed on Feb. 5, with his family by his side. He bravely battled his illness with dignity and valor. At present, we should honor his family’s privacy during their time of mourning.
Following the announcement of his death, Underwood posted an emotional tribute on Instagram, accompanied by multiple pictures of them both as country artists. Her caption read, “It’s time to mount our horses, Lord, because a genuine COWBOY has ascended to heaven!!!”
Joining Toby Keith in his tribute concert, various artists will be performing some of his legendary songs. Eric Church will sing “As Good as I Once Was”, while Brantley Gilbert and HARDY will tackle “How Do You Like Me Now?!” Riley Green and Ella Langley will team up for “Who’s Your Daddy?”, with Ashley McBryde performing “Wish I Didn’t Know Now”.
Luke Bryan is set to sing Should’ve Been a Cowboy while donning a black cowboy hat. Lainey Wilson and Jamey Johnson will collaborate on Beer for My Horses. Additionally, Darius Rucker, Jordan Davis, Clay Walker, and Tyler Hubbard are all joining in for this unforgettable tribute performance.
Earlier this year, Keith’s passing was followed by an enduring musical legacy marked by 42 Top 10 singles, 33 chart-topping hits, and the sale of over 44 million albums.
On Wednesday, August 28th, starting at 9 PM Eastern Time/Pacific Time, Toby Keith: American Icon will be broadcasted on NBC. You can also catch it streaming the next day on Peacock.
