As a long-time Star Trek enthusiast and a fan of Carol Kane’s illustrious career spanning over four decades, I couldn’t be more thrilled to witness her joining the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds family. Her addition as Pelia, the new Chief Engineer of the Enterprise, is not only a testament to the show’s commitment to diversity but also an exciting development for fans like me.
Carol Kane was added in the second season of Star Trek Strange New Worlds as Pelia, the new Chief Engineer of the Starship Enterprise and a member of the extremely-long-lived Lanthanite species. But when the Academy nominee and two-time Emmy winning actress was approached for the role she was taken aback.
At STLV: Trek to Vegas, Kane made her debut at her very first convention. During a Q&A session with fans, she shared her initial feelings about the role, her methods for portraying it, and even drew some comparisons between herself and her on-screen character.
She expressed being astonished yet delighted upon finding herself embraced within this cosmos. Yet, she’s grateful for having seized the opportunity and dived headlong into it. In terms of her character, Kane shared that she is portrayed as more self-assured than she actually is in real life.
Kane, renowned for her boldness in expressing her thoughts openly, often in a straightforward manner, shared something intriguing about herself. This directness poses a challenge for me, yet I find it captivating. I admire venturing into the space where she communicates so fearlessly, she remarked.
Regarding her portrayal of the character, the actress admitted it was difficult due to a lack of defining traits. “I was absolutely petrified,” she reminisced, emphasizing her fear.
As the Chief Engineer, she had to be extremely mindful about her choice of words and ensure that every line flowed smoothly. “I must admit,” Kane confessed, “I have to learn it word for word and I’m hardly familiar with most of what I say.”
Now, Pelia, who steps into the role previously held by Lt. Hemmer (Bruce Horak), will become a permanent fixture in the show for its third season. While Scotty (Martin Quinn) is also a regular addition to season 3, both characters—Scotty and Pelia—will share duties on the Enterprise during this upcoming season.
1. Kane’s personality could make him an integral part of the team within the enterprise, and he might even become widely admired by viewers.
