Captain America: Brave New World Ticket Sales Mirror MCU’s Biggest Flop!

It’s said that the presale figures for “Captain America: Brave New World” are comparable to those of “Eternals,” which earned an opening of $71 million upon release. However, this could be seen as a potential challenge or obstacle in terms of ticket sales.

As a follower, I’ve noticed that the film “Eternals” is often cited as one of the MCU’s biggest financial disappointments, raking in approximately $402 million at the box office. Unfortunately, there won’t be an “Eternals 2,” and it was recently disclosed that the same producer responsible for “Eternals” and “Captain America: Brave New World” is parting ways with Marvel. Additionally, it has been reported that “Brave New World” has undergone numerous reshoots, significantly increasing its budget to over $350 million, which is considerably higher than the cost of producing “Eternals.

Movie theaters are empty

After tickets for “Captain America: Brave New World” went on sale a week ago, I visited nearby cinemas to find them quite sparse. Just as I mentioned on Twitter, it seems that my local theaters for this movie aren’t very busy.

Presale ticket report

Now we get a report from Luiz Fernando via X who covers box office news on X.

Nowhere near Quantumania, on par with Eternals

Fernando has reviewed the pre-sale ticket figures for “Captain America: Brave New World,” and he notes that while they aren’t approaching the staggering $106 million debut of “Quantumania,” they are outperforming both “The Marvels” ($46M opening) and “Joker 2” ($37.6M), which are among the poorest-performing Comic Book Movies (CBMs) ever made. However, Fernando points out that the ticket sales still fall short of both “Black Widow’s” ($80M opening) and “Dune 2” ($82.5M debut). In simpler terms, while Captain America’s pre-sale numbers are doing well compared to some other movies, they’re not as impressive as Black Widow or Dune 2 when it comes to ticket sales.

Fernando posted: “Indeed, the pre-sale for Captain America: Brave New World began on Friday at the US box office. After the initial two days, it’s not quite as big as Quantumania, which debuted in 2023, but it’s currently outperforming The Marvels and Joker: Folie à Deux by a factor of 1.4, matching the performance of Eternals, and not lagging far behind Black Widow and Dune: Part Two in terms of their first two days of pre-sales.

Hoped to beat Shang-Chi

Fernando makes a point to draw parallels between “Captain America: Brave New World” and the original Captain America and Thor films, noting that while they opened with $65M, accounting for inflation, it equates to around $90M. He expresses optimism that this could surpass Shang-Chi’s opening of $75M. However, Fernando states something unusual, suggesting “Brave New World” will have strong word of mouth, contrary to the current reception, at least for now.

According to Fernando’s post, if the tempo remains consistent with previous films, Captain America 4 might outperform both Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger in their opening three days at the box office. It could even aim to surpass Shang-Chi’s impressive three-day opening, a feat made possible by favorable word of mouth and the Labor Day holiday boost. This is similar to what Captain America 4 might expect to benefit from as well, particularly on Sunday.

Did Deadpool and Wolverine hurt Captain America: Brave New World?

Fernando also believes it’s beneficial for “Captain America: Brave New World” to follow “Deadpool” and “Wolverine”. However, I’d counter that by stating these two movies served as a reminder to fans about Chris Evans, who is now reportedly rejoining the MCU alongside Robert Downey Jr. in “Avengers: Doomsday”.

Fernando tweeted that Captain America has an edge over previous films because it’s following Deadpool and Wolverine, which have drawn many casual viewers back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This placement alone might lead to a bigger turnout for Captain America 4 than its competitors.

President’s Day weekend doesn’t matter

Furthermore, as Fernando mentioned, “Captain America: Brave New World” premieres over the President’s Day weekend, and he believes this could be advantageous for the film. Nevertheless, he clarified that ticket sales are significantly lower than those of “Quantumania,” indicating that the holiday weekend might not make a significant difference. Ultimately, what truly matters is whether the movies are good quality.

On Valentine’s Day, Captain America: Brave New World will premiere, leveraging the extended break over the President’s Day weekend,” he shared on Twitter.

Box office estimates

At present, projections suggest the box office earnings could range from $86-$95 million, with some predicting as high as $107 million. However, data from advance ticket sales indicate these figures are overly optimistic. Additionally, we’ll gain insight into Marvel’s confidence in the film’s word of mouth when they permit review sites to publish their reviews. If they release on the same day or even a day prior, it typically doesn’t bode well.
