`Captain America: Brave New World Flops`

Brave New World” were estimated at $12 million, which appears to be quite low compared to “Quantuamania’s” $17.5M from 2023. Despite reports suggesting that “Brave New World” ticket sales have been approximately 10%-15% below those of “Quantumania”, the Thursday earnings should have been around $15-$16 million. However, the actual earnings are over 30% lower than “Quantumania”.

NO comparison to Captain America: The Winter Soldier

To set the record straight, I must admit that nothing beats the sheer greatness of 2014’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” for me. It stands head and shoulders above other films, both in terms of quality and box office earnings. Some outlets like Deadline might try to present “Brave New World” as a worthy competitor, but they seem to forget one crucial factor: inflation. If we adjust for the changing value of money over time, it’s clear that “Winter Soldier” is still the champion.

Back in 2014, the movie “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” premiered. Translated into current money, the Thursday previews ($10.2M) would amount to approximately $13.69 million. Similarly, its three-day opening ($95M) from a decade ago would equate to an astounding $127.48 million in today’s dollars.

Latest estimates

The film adaptation of “Brave New World” is set to debut over a long holiday weekend, with hopes it might earn around $95 million. Initial predictions suggest a $80 million three-day and $94 million four-day opening. It’s intriguing to monitor its performance on Friday and Saturday. Word of mouth is spreading, but responses from fans have been predominantly negative, although as I mentioned in my review, it can still be enjoyed as an entertaining superhero popcorn movie. Unfortunately, Deadline reports that social media engagement isn’t particularly strong for “Captain America: Brave New World,” and it’s performing average compared to other superhero movies. It falls far short of the popularity of films like “Deadpool” and “Wolverine,” even being surpassed by “Thor: Love and Thunder.” (Ouch.)

Crushed by the critics

Title “Captain America: A Fresh Universe” is receiving mixed reviews from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, currently holding a score of 53%. Similarly, its audience rating for a superhero film is relatively low at 79%. While I personally enjoyed the movie (you can read my review here where I rate it 7/10), it seems many fans aren’t content with Anthony Mackie as Captain America. Given the intense journey of Marvel stories over the past five years, it’s understandable that fans might feel this way. Just like they showed with “The Marvels”, fans are expressing their dissatisfaction through their wallets.
