Captain America: Brave New World Faces Major Box Office Plunge – What Went Wrong?

The upcoming challenge for Marvel lies in determining the second weekend’s box office earnings for the movie titled “Captain America: Brave New World“.

Initially, the four-day break saw an impressive surge, generating $100 million. This appears to align with my forecast, suggesting that many viewers attended primarily to gauge the film’s quality. On a personal note, I found the movie wasn’t as terrible as I anticipated. Despite having low expectations, it turned out to be quite enjoyable for me. Many others share this sentiment, although the majority of fans seem to have a negative inclination. As of now, the Rotten Tomatoes audience rating stands at 80%, which is relatively low for a Comic Book Movie. It’s crucial to note that Rotten Tomatoes tallies verified purchases made via the Fandango app only, so the actual rating might be lower.

What are the estimates for the second weekend?

The projected earnings for the second weekend of “Deadline” have been revised down to around $20 million to $30 million, which is a significant decrease from the initial estimate of over $30 million. If “Captain America: Brave New World” manages to earn $29 million, it would represent a drop of approximately 67%, but it could potentially fall even lower than that; for instance, “Quantumania” saw a decline of 69.9% and “The Marvels” holds the record for the largest drop at 78.1%.

Comparing to Quantumania

The movie “Captain America: Brave New World” is following closely in box office earnings with “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” but interestingly, unlike Quantumania, Brave New World seems to be struggling a bit. In fact, it’s currently performing about 15% lower than Quantumania did initially. If this trend persists, it might only manage to gross around $400 million, while Quantumania made more. The movie apparently needs at least $450 million to cover its costs, so it seems like another potential financial disappointment for Kevin Feige.

Here are some numbers:

  • Captain America: Brave New World opened to a 4-day $100M, Quantumania to $120.3M.
  • Brave New World is estimated at best to bring in $29M for weekend two, Quantumania brought in nearly $32 million.
  • Quantumania finished with $476M worldwide: $214.5M domestically, $261.5 internationally.
  • Captain America: Brave New World currently is at $113M domestic, $98.2M international (numbers will go up this weekend).
