Based on current projections, it appears that the opening weekend earnings of Captain America: Brave New World might be much less compared to Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which premiered during the same weekend in 2023.
What are the latest estimates?
As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that according to Deadline, the highly anticipated film, “Captain America: Brave New World,” is projected to rake in an impressive 4-day take over President’s Day weekend, surpassing the $95 million mark!
Quantumania opened to a 4-day $120.3M and a $106.1M 3-day opening.
The film “Captain America: Brave New World” is falling short when compared to the four-day box office records for Presidents Day weekend in 2018, held by “Black Panther” with $242.1 million and “Deadpool” with $152.1 million.
Previous estimates have said Brave New World could open to as high as $107M or as low as $86M.
How are ticket sales?
As a supporter, I’m excitedly sharing that the tickets for the upcoming release have been available since Monday, but they’re currently lagging behind “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” by about 15%. To put it into perspective, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” opened to a staggering $118M, and we’re sitting at around $4M as of now. However, I must also mention that our ticket sales are significantly higher than those for “Shang-Chi,” which grossed approximately $94.6M in its first four days. Let’s keep the momentum going!
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve been keeping an eye on the box office numbers, and it seems that presales for our upcoming film are matching those of “Eternals.” We’re hopeful that our adaptation of “Brave New World” will surpass the success of “Shang-Chi.” However, it appears that ticket sales aren’t yet reaching the levels of “Quantumania,” and we’re falling a bit short compared to “Black Widow.
The deadline suggests that the movie might not appeal to women, as it’s described as having an appealing factor for men, specifically those over and under the age of 25. However, the film has been positively received by a varied demographic, including Latino and Black audiences, who find it solid.
Word of mouth will make or break the film
According to a recent statement, the estimated budget for “Captain America: Brave New World” is approximately $180 million. However, earlier reports suggest that due to extensive reshoots, the actual budget might be closer to double that figure, around $350 million. Notably, the movie’s producer, who also worked on “Eternals,” has recently left Marvel Studios.
Given the substantial budget for Brave New World, it’s evident that it needs to generate significant revenue just to cover its costs. A debut smaller than Quantumania and earnings similar to Eternals is not an encouraging beginning. As reviews are still forthcoming, it appears this film could heavily depend on word of mouth for success, given that the initial response seems lackluster.
Captain America: Brave New World opens Feb. 14 and on Feb. 13 with early previews.
