Cannes 2025: From Alpha to The History of Sound, Movies to Watch Out for at 78th Film Festival

The highly acclaimed Cannes Film Festival is quickly approaching, and it has a reputation for highlighting the finest films from throughout the years. This event values and embraces diversity, whether it’s through the selection of the films themselves or the composition of the jury panel.

In addition, the recipients of the Palme d’Or in recent times have garnered acclaim during awards season and have been among the top films. Here are six noteworthy movies worth watching at this year’s event: The History of Sound, Alpha, and more.

Alpha

Renowned director Julia Ducournau, a past winner of the Palme d’Or, is back with another captivating movie, set to be screened at the 78th Cannes Film Festival. Titled “Alpha,” this film delves into the horror genre, providing a haunting portrayal of the AIDS crisis that swept across the globe in the 1980s. For Ducournau, this project is said to be her most “intimate and profound” work yet.

Eddington

Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal have joined forces for a film titled “Eddington,” which unfolds during the COVID-19 pandemic. This unique production offers an engaging mix of contemporary and satirical elements, shedding light on the complex tensions between law enforcement and local politics in a novel manner. The cast additionally includes Emma Stone and Austin Butler, with scenes taking place in a New Mexico town.

The History of Sound

According to South African director Oliver Hermanus, “The History of Sound” is a film that unfolds during World War I, featuring Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor as a gay couple. In this movie, they depict the characters Lionel and David, who are students at the New England Conservatory. Their journey involves gathering folk songs from their compatriots.

Highest 2 Lowest

As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be collaborating with Denzel Washington for the fifth time, as he takes on the role of a businessman in the film adaptation of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 police procedural crime film, High to Low. This upcoming project boasts an impressive cast including musician Ice Spice, A$AP Rocky, and Jeffrey Wright. The movie will be inspired by Evan Hunter’s book King’s Ransom, following the ups and downs of a businessman’s life, a journey that promises to take us from highs to lows.

Die, My Love

After nearly a decade away from the big screen, filmmaker Lynne Ramsay is back, collaborating with Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson on a new project titled “Die, My Love.” In this movie, we follow Grace, a woman grappling with postpartum depression as she navigates motherhood. Her husband, portrayed by Pattinson, and lover, played by LaKeith Stanfield, are supporting characters in her tumultuous life, as the story unfolds in an emotionally charged setting.

Honey Don’t

Actors Margaret Qualley and Chris Evans are set to appear together in the upcoming Cannes premiere of “Honey Don’t,” directed by Ethan Coen. This film follows the story of a small-town detective piecing together clues to solve local murders. Interestingly, Qualley has previously worked with Coen on the movie “Drive-Away Dolls” which was released last year. The ensemble cast also includes Aubrey Plaza, who takes on the role of a lesbian cop in this production.
