As a seasoned observer of the ever-evolving television landscape and having spent my formative years as a cast member of Saturday Night Live, I must confess that I find myself at odds with the categorization of FX’s The Bear in the comedy section for this year’s Emmy Awards.
Last Sunday, a former Saturday Night Live cast member, Laraine Newman, voiced her discontent over The Bear, an FX/Hulu hit series, competing in the comedy categories for the 2024 Emmy Awards. Despite its triumphant evening at this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards with multiple major wins, Newman, who is renowned as a comedy expert, expressed her disappointment about the show’s eligibility.
Whenever I imagine The Bear competing in the comedy category at the Emmys, it gives me the sensation that I might develop an ulcer, Newman penned down.
This year, Hannah Einbinder, daughter of Newman, was nominated for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series for her role in Hacks. However, it was Liza Colón-Zayas who took home the Emmy for her performance in The Bear. In doing so, Colón-Zayas became the first Latina to win the award in this category, thus making history with her victory.
As a lifestyle expert reflecting on the captivating series “The Bear,” debuted in 2022, I must admit that its success among Television Academy members has sparked intriguing discussions within the industry. The question on everyone’s lips is whether this show truly falls under the comedy genre, given its thought-provoking themes and minimal instances of laughter. Instead, it delves deep into the complexities of life in a high-pressure kitchen environment, offering an emotional rollercoaster that resonates with viewers, rather than tickling their funny bones.
Besides Newman, other individuals have raised doubts about why The Bear is listed in the comedy category of the renowned awards show. This issue has sparked discussions on social media, and the hosts of this year’s event, Eugene Levy and his son Dan, even made light of it with a joke during the ceremony.
This year, the comedy series starring Jeremy Allen White broke a record by earning 23 nominations at the Emmys. Later in 2024, The Bear not only made it to the awards show but also bagged several Emmy awards, including Best Actor in a Comedy Series for White and Best Supporting Actor (won by Moss-Bachrach).
