As a die-hard fan of I Know What You Did Last Summer, I’m absolutely thrilled to hear about the upcoming reboot of this classic horror film! The fact that Madelyn Cline and Camila Mendes are in talks to join the cast is particularly exciting for me. I’ve been following their careers since their days on Outer Banks and Riverdale respectively, and I can’t wait to see them bring new life to these iconic roles.
Before its release the following summer, “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is generating buzz. Sony Pictures is reportedly discussing deals with Madelyn Cline from “Outer Banks” and Camila Mendes, known for her role on “Riverdale.” Additionally, Sarah Pidgeon, a Tony Award nominee, Tyriq Withers from Atlanta, and Jonah Hauer-King, who played Prince Eric in Disney’s live-action “The Little Mermaid,” are reportedly in negotiations for the film.
Reboot in the works with Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr.
Previously, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. were in discussions to rejoin the cast. Leah McKendrick’s original report has been updated: Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (director of “Do Revenge”) is helming this new production based on a screenplay she co-wrote with Sam Lansky. Neal Moritz, who produced the initial film, is joined by additional producers. Sony has set a tentative release date for July 18, 2025.
In October 1997, I Know What You Did Last Summer premiered at the box office, earning approximately $72 million (equivalent to around $142 million today). The plot centered on a gang of friends who concealed striking a stranger with their vehicle, but were later pursued relentlessly by a vengeful figure wielding a hook. Notable actors including Hewitt, Prinze, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Ryan Phillippe graced the film’s cast. Originating from Lois Duncan’s 1973 novel, the screenplay was penned by Kevin Williamson, renowned for his work on Scream.
When Hewitt and Prinze came back for “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer” in 1998, it was a new adventure for us. But in 2006, things took a fresh turn with an entirely new cast in “I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer.” And just recently, Amazon brought the story to life once more through their streaming series in 2021.
In the new version of Scream, released in 2022, some of the original cast members, such as Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera, join forces with fresh, rising talents. This aligns with the film industry trend, as seen in movies like Anyone but You starring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, where studios focus on launching the careers of young actors.
Who are the other cast members?
I had the privilege of bringing Veronica to life on Riverdale, a role that eventually earned me widespread recognition. Unfortunately, that show came to an end last year. Yet, my collaborative work with Robinson on Do Revenge, a 2022 Netflix teen black comedy, kept my presence in the limelight. Additionally, I’ve made a mark as Sarah Cameron on Outer Banks. Moreover, I was among the prominent suspects in Rian Johnson’s Glass Onion.
At present, Pidgeon is portraying Diana in “Stereophonic” on Broadway, repeating her character from its Off-Broadway debut at Playwrights Horizons. This year alone, her “musical play” received a remarkable 13 Tony Award nominations, making it a record for the most nods for a solo performance. Furthermore, she has been recognized with nominations for the Drama League’s distinguished performance accolade and the Outer Critics Circle’s outstanding featured performer award. In addition to her theater work, Pidgeon has appeared on the small screen in shows such as Hulu’s “Tiny Beautiful Things” and Amazon’s “The Wilds,” where she portrayed a young Kathryn Hahn.
After being wrapped up in productions for Universal Pictures and Monkeypaw Productions following his role as “Goat” in Atlanta, Marlon Wayans is now prepared to shine on the big screen. In this upcoming film, Wayans portrays an aging Hollywood star who takes a young, promising quarterback under his wing to train with his fading team. Alicia Withers stars in the lead role of this psychological thriller, set for release in cinemas in September 2025.
As an obsessed fan, I can’t help but share my excitement about the talented British actor, Hauer-King! He’s graced our screens in brilliant adaptations of literary classics like “Little Women” and “Howard’s End,” which left me absolutely captivated. Most recently, he starred in the gripping historical drama, “The Tattooist of Auschwitz,” that aired on Peacock this past spring. I couldn’t get enough!
Hauer-King is represented by three agencies: the U.K.’s United Agents, CAA, and Jackoway Austen. Similarly, Pidgeon is associated with three firms: Gersh, Anonymous Content, and Jackoway Austen.
