BUZZ: Did Robert Downey Jr Turn Down Deadpool & Wolverine After Reading His Part In Script?

As a long-time Marvel enthusiast with decades of comic book lore etched into my memory banks, I must say that the recent revival of iconic characters like Deadpool and Wolverine has truly brought back the nostalgia and excitement we all crave. The camaraderie between Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman on screen is a spectacle to behold. However, it seems that not everyone was part of this grand reunion – case in point, Robert Downey Jr., who initially was set to join forces with the Avengers once more.

Deadpool and Wolverine have revitalized the classic appeal of Marvel, leaving audiences thrilled by Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s on-screen camaraderie. Additionally, a significant aspect of the film has been the surprise appearances of esteemed actors reprising their legendary roles. The Marvel production also welcomed back Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth to the series.

In an interview with IndieWire, filmmakers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese shared that they had originally written a role for Robert Downey Jr. in the upcoming Marvel movie. Additionally, they mentioned their intention to reunite the six primary Avengers for a scene in the film.

Instead, the Oscar-winning actor declined the role in the movie, since it seemed Marvel had different strategies for reincorporating the actor into their series. According to Rhett Reese, the Deadpool actor penned a scene featuring himself and Downey Jr. together.

Reese mentioned that Ryan Reynolds was the one who penned the scene featuring both of them, hoping to bring Downey on board. Additionally, he noted that Reynolds also desired Favreau to be part of it as well, because they make a fantastic pair, and all three of them were in the same scene.

In a conversation, Wernick revealed that the initial part of Deadpool & Wolverine featured Iron Man alongside Happy (Jon Favreau) in an interview room. This is where Deadpool unexpectedly joined the Avengers group.

Reese stated that when Downey Jr. refused involvement in the film, it was apparently the first “no” we’ve received, referring to instances where someone simply declined participation.

The co-writer also commented, “However, I believe Marvel had a hidden advantage, as he was set to reappear in another role. Given this, having him as Tony Stark, with Doctor Doom approaching afterwards, seemed illogical.”

At the San Diego Comic-Con’s Marvel panel, it was revealed that the actor from Oppenheimer will rejoin the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), this time donning the evil armor of Dr. Doom. Furthermore, Marvel Studios disclosed that the Russo Brothers are set to return as directors for the forthcoming Avengers films titled Doomsday and Secret Wars.

As an ardent fan, I’m thrilled to see that Deadpool & Wolverine are currently tearing up the big screen! In the meantime, I eagerly await the upcoming blockbusters: Avengers: Doomsday, set to premiere in May 2026, and Secret Wars, slated for release in May 2027.
