The beloved series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” is set to return to our television screens in a reboot, helmed by the creators of “Poker Face” and Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao. Sarah Michelle Gellar will once again embody Buffy Summers, but fans are left wondering about the original cast members. While we have immense affection for Gellar, it’s the exceptional ensemble cast that truly made “Buffy” shine. Here are the characters we believe should return and be a part of the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” sequel reboot series.
Remark: Mostly, we chose not to resurrect any deceased characters from the series as a mark of respect for their departures. Exceptions like Joyce Summers, Anya, Tara, and one other character are considered significant and should remain that way. However, there’s an exception to this rule which you’ll discover as you continue reading. In the meantime, let’s discuss the Buffy characters we anticipate returning for the new Hulu reboot.
Willow Rosenberg (Alyson Hannigan)
Since the debut of Buffy the Vampire Slayer in 1997, Willow Rosenberg has been an unwavering best friend to Buffy Summers. Apart from that one instance where she almost brought about the end of the world and had a heated confrontation with Buffy (which we’ll gloss over for now), they’ve been inseparable. If there was one character fans would most like to see in a reboot, it’s Alyson Hannigan’s powerful lesbian witch, Willow Rosenberg. Given that the original series ended decades ago, we can only imagine how much stronger her magical abilities have become. We’re on the edge of our seats, eagerly awaiting her return with all the might of Elphaba. Should Willow Rosenberg not make an appearance in any capacity in a reboot, fans would likely be up in arms.
Rupert Giles (Anthony Stewart Head)
Throughout the original series run, I served as Buffy’s Watcher and mentor, that starchy British librarian character you might remember. Though I stepped down during the show’s sixth season, it seemed I was always drawn back when my Slayer was in dire need. Even though Buffy no longer required a Watcher after season five, it’s hard to imagine Anthony Stewart Head not being involved in any Buffy continuation.
In the new series, if Buffy is indeed training new Slayers (which seems plausible), she might reach out to her old mentor and father figure for help at least once. It’s moments like these when I get a bit sentimental seeing Rupert Giles fumble with his glasses, visibly flustered by the youth’s slang and music tastes.
Xander Harris (Nicholas Brendon)
Since the conclusion of “Buffy,” Xander Harris, her closest male confidant, has stirred up controversy. This could be due to the fact that some of his previously humorous portrayals of questionable masculine behavior are no longer viewed as charming or amusing. However, it’s important to remember that Xander stood by Buffy throughout the entire series, even sacrificing an eye in battle while fighting on the Slayer team. In the comic books following the series, he married Buffy’s sister Dawn. While it’s uncertain if a new show would follow this narrative, it’s possible. It’s worth mentioning that the actor who played Xander, Nicholas Brendon, has faced numerous challenges since “Buffy” ended, including legal issues related to domestic abuse and other personal struggles. Some fans might not welcome his return for these reasons, and we understand their concerns. Nevertheless, it’s hard to ignore Xander’s significant role as one of Buffy’s closest allies, part of the so-called “Core Four.
Angel (David Boreanaz)
As a devoted movie enthusiast, I can’t help but acknowledge one of the most significant characters in Buffyverse lore: Angel, the soulful vampire who captured Buffy’s heart during the show’s early seasons, portrayed by the talented David Boreanaz. From his initial appearance on Buffy to his own spin-off series that lasted an additional five years, the emotional rollercoaster of their tumultuous love story provided plenty of angst, drama, and heartfelt moments, particularly from Sarah Michelle Gellar.
Fast forward to today, David Boreanaz has carved out a remarkable TV career. Transitioning seamlessly from his iconic role in Angel to 12 seasons on Bones, and then directly to another seven years on SEAL Team. This man has been gracing our screens for an impressive 25 consecutive years. He’s almost like the male equivalent of Betty White, maintaining a steady presence in our living rooms for decades.
The question still stands: Would he agree to play the role that catapulted him to stardom once more, considering his close friendship with Sarah Michelle Gellar? However, there’s a significant challenge if Boreanaz is to return as Angel. As a vampire, Angel doesn’t age, but Boreanaz, a human, clearly has. Despite his handsome and mature looks, it seems unrealistic for him to continue portraying “Forever 25.” Although digital de-aging technology exists, it often appears artificial. Could it be that the prophecy from his own series came true, transforming Angel into a human? It would certainly make for an interesting twist to see how they’d handle this change. It’s difficult to envision a Buffy reboot without the presence of her one true love.
Spike (James Marsters)
Reflecting upon the captivating evolution of “souled vampires,” none can surpass the mesmerizing journey of James Marsters’ character, Spike, in the original series. Across five seasons of Buffy and one of Angel, the iconic blonde “William the Bloody” transformed from a ruthless antagonist to an irritating sidekick, then to a charismatic love interest with a twisted edge, ultimately becoming a heroic vampire, outshining even Angel himself. It’s hard to imagine Buffy without him. Given David Boreanaz and James Marsters might require advanced digital de-aging to reprise their roles since they are immortal vampires, it’s not far-fetched to envision them making it work. This is due to the significant impact Spike has left on the series.
Assuming that the comics no longer serve as canon, the last time we saw Spike and Buffy together, she declared her love for him before his selfless sacrifice to save the world (which he miraculously survived in Angel). There isn’t a single Buffy fan who wouldn’t long to hear about their reunion conversation.
Faith (Eliza Dushku)
Many fans of the TV show “Buffy” consider its third season to be its most outstanding, primarily due to the compelling storyline involving Buffy’s fellow Slayer, Faith, portrayed by Eliza Dushku. As the third season progressed, Faith switched sides and became one of the series’ most formidable antagonists. Later on, over several subsequent seasons, Buffy and Angel managed to bring Faith back from darkness. In the final episode, they fought together against the First Evil. Since then, the fate of Faith has been unclear outside of comic books, which may no longer be considered canon. At one point, a spin-off was suggested for her character. Given the enthusiasm of fans, there is speculation as to whether Eliza Dushku would be open to helping Buffy train a new generation of Slayers in a potential reboot, given that Faith’s redemption arc could continue in this context.
Cordelia Chase (Charisma Carpenter)
It seems there’s been a change in the initial “no dead characters” rule for the Buffy character reboot list. This exception is being made for Cordelia Chase due to several reasons. Firstly, Charisma Carpenter is an original cast member from the Buffy series, and Cordy’s transformation from a “mean girl” to a hero was groundbreaking in TV history. Secondly, her death in Angel‘s last season had some questionable aspects, both for the character and the actress who portrayed her. This ambiguous ending leaves room for speculation about her possible return. In earlier seasons of Angel, Cordelia became a “Higher Being,” which hints at the possibility that she could return from this higher plane. We’d love to see our charismatic Cordy back, looking fabulous, and exchanging witty banter with the Scoobies once more.
