Buffy Reboot Script Leak Reveals An Unrecognizable Buffy

A leaked page from the script of the new Buffy pilot suggests why the Hulu series, Buffy: New Sunnydale, faced difficulties during production.

A page posted on X by Robert Meyer Burnett shows Buffy Summers, now going by “Anne Summers,” working a typical office job at a large insurance company. Suddenly, her computer starts displaying alerts connected to her old hometown, Sunnydale.

The page closes with the line: “Off Buffy, far from the Slayer we once knew her to be…”

Final page shows Buffy far removed from who she used to be

The leaked page depicts Buffy living a very different life – no longer actively fighting as the Slayer. Instead, she’s going by the name “Anne Summers” and stuck in a dull office job, attending a tedious meeting, and appearing far removed from her past as a heroic vampire slayer.

It’s not until the very end that the warnings in Sunnydale suggest a larger threat is emerging, but by that point, the story has already portrayed Buffy as very different from the Slayer audiences know and love.

The way the show ended is drawing criticism because it implies the reboot was heading in a direction many fans dislike. Rather than bringing Buffy back as a major hero or introducing a new Slayer like the show Cobra Kai did, the final scene portrays her as a diminished version of the hero viewers remember.

Script blamed

Burnett was strongly critical of a leaked script page from the upcoming ‘Buffy’ reboot. He posted on X, saying that if you’re going to revive ‘Buffy,’ you should actually focus on what made the original series great. He added that viewers aren’t interested in a new group of characters who are badly written and irritating, and that the creators simply don’t understand the show’s appeal.

I was really disappointed with the script, and honestly, I thought the writers, Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, just didn’t get the fundamentals of good storytelling right. It felt like the story itself was failing, and that was a huge problem for me.

The recent Buffy reboot didn’t work because the writers, two sisters, primarily gained their storytelling experience from watching television, not from reading the fantasy and classic literature that inspired the original series. Their script clearly showed a lack of experience with literary foundations. As one person put it, Buffy was originally created by a man, and that played a role.

Gellar Blames Disney Executive, As Buffy Pilot Neared Pickup

Sarah Michelle Gellar explained that problems during the development of the ‘Buffy’ reboot stemmed from a key executive who didn’t like the original show and openly expressed that dislike.

Deadline later revealed the executive in question was Craig Erwich, President of Disney Television Group. He’s in charge of Hulu Originals and was the one who decided against continuing with the pilot.

According to Deadline, the project wasn’t canceled after all. The first pilot received feedback that it felt too juvenile and lacked scope, so the creators, the Zuckermans, revised it into a 90-minute version. This rewrite was more mature, included more of the character Buffy Summers, and was considered a significant improvement by those who saw it.

Industry insiders said the revised plan was gaining traction, and some thought a deal was near until Hulu surprisingly backed out.

Leaked Script May Be The Clearest Reason Buffy Reboot Fell Apart

Despite the internal finger-pointing, the leaked documents remain the most concerning issue.

Despite all the talk about feminism, the new team dynamic, and a drastically different Buffy, the actual script might be what truly reveals how the story will unfold.

It seems like issues behind the scenes at Disney and Hulu, combined with a lack of audience interest, likely caused the planned Buffy reboot to fall through.
