It’s sadly confirmed: the planned Buffy reboot has been canceled by Hulu. While it was only approved for a pilot episode, many fans, including us, were really hopeful about the revival. It’s disappointing to see the project end so abruptly, before anyone had a chance to see if it would work. Here’s what we know about the cancellation.
Sarah Michelle Gellar shared disappointing news with fans on Instagram: the planned reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, titled Buffy: New Sunnydale, won’t be moving forward on Hulu. She said she was sad to deliver the news and expressed gratitude to director Chloé Zhao for the opportunity to revisit the role, adding that it reminded her how much she loves the character and how much Buffy means to her and her fans. She emphasized that the cancellation doesn’t diminish that love.
Gellar ended the heartfelt message with a charming reference to a famous line from Buffy, playfully promising, “And I promise, even if the world ends, you can still reach me.”
Now that Hulu has decided not to move forward with the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, it’s uncertain if the project will be offered to other networks or streaming services. The planned series would have featured a new slayer, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, with familiar faces like Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) acting as mentors. While other characters from the original series were also expected to make appearances, no castings had been officially announced.
It’s disappointing news for fans of Buffy who were hoping to revisit that world. The original Buffy series was incredibly impactful and really resonated with a whole generation. While we’ll have to see if a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot happens – especially with Sarah Michelle Gellar potentially interested – we’re staying hopeful, just like Buffy herself would.
It’s ironic that you can now watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer on Hulu, despite the fact that Hulu previously canceled its planned reboot of the show.
