Details emerging about the canceled Buffy reboot on Disney+ and Hulu suggest it was likely canceled due to its progressive themes being considered too controversial.
The reason is right there in the reported pilot script.
A page from the unreleased comic book Buffy: New Sunnydale, shared online by Robert Meyer Burnett, is gaining attention. One line, in particular – “trying to weaponize my feminism against me” – is really resonating with people.

The script points to the problem
The reported exchange reads:
STACYYou could’ve at least defended me —
CHRISI didn’t want to take away youragency, babe. You hate it when Idim your light.
STACYThat is so you, trying to weaponizemy feminism against me. I’m goinghome.
Based on that script, it’s easy to understand why Disney and Hulu chose not to move forward with this version of Buffy – similar issues also derailed The Bride.
This is a scene from page 2 of the new Buffy series pilot script. Stacy is upset with Chris.
STACY
You could have at least stood up for me!CHRIS
I didn’t want to control you or take away your independence, babe. I know you don’t like it when I make you feel small.STACY
That’s just like you – using my own beliefs against me. I’m leaving now.— Robert Meyer Burnett, Viceroy of Verisimilitude (@RMBee) March 16, 2026
Hulu passed on the pilot
I was really excited about the new Buffy pilot, but unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with it. It was supposed to be a continuation of the Buffy universe, and I’m so disappointed we won’t be seeing that story unfold now.
Sarah Michelle Gellar was planned to make repeat appearances. Ryan Kiera Armstrong was cast as the new Slayer. Chloé Zhao, the director of Eternals, was going to direct the project. Joss Whedon was not part of the production.
Hulu offered a significant deal for the show, so their decision to back out likely means they had concerns about the people making it, beyond just the financial aspects.

Disney’s changing climate adds to it
The timing also matters.
The announcement of a new Buffy series arrives as Disney has been scaling back some of its diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, a point recently emphasized by Donald Trump in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social.
“Disney Ends Key DEI Practices” is listed as one of Trump’s “Reforms.”
This change has definitely altered how we decide which projects to fund and which ones aren’t worth pursuing anymore.
It’s not surprising when a pilot episode of Buffy includes dialogue that feels overly focused on current feminist ideas, and then gets cancelled – the connection is pretty clear.

It probably was not a coincidence
According to Deadline, the project had issues, and there was even discussion about re-shooting the first episode. This indicates Hulu recognized those problems.
The leaked script gives a strong clue about what at least some of those problems may have been.
If the goal of the reboot was to start a new direction for the series with this kind of storytelling, then it seems Hulu likely canceled it due to its progressive themes.
