Bucky Barnes’ Long Haircut Returns in MCU THUNDERBOLTS* Movie

As a die-hard MCU fan who has witnessed Bucky Barnes’ transformation from a troubled young boy to the Winter Soldier and back, I can confidently say that the return of his long hair in the upcoming Thunderbolts movie is nothing short of a relief. After the abrupt haircut in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier left me feeling as disoriented as Bucky himself, this long-awaited change is like a breath of fresh air.

Following the events of “Avengers: Endgame”, the Marvel Cinematic Universe experienced numerous changes. Tony Stark sacrificed his life to save the world, Black Widow met a tragic end, and Steve Rogers mysteriously disappeared after returning to the past. A lesser-discussed change involved Bucky Barnes, who was played by Sebastian Stan. In “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”, Bucky sported a short haircut instead of his signature long locks. Some viewers saw this as part of his recovery process as he distanced himself from The Winter Soldier. However, in the context of “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”, it may have been an overcorrection. Excitingly, at San Diego Comic-Con’s exclusive “Thunderbolts” first-look, Bucky Barnes’ long hair made its comeback in the MCU! (Cue the joyful cheers from fans everywhere.)

As a fervent fan, I must confess that, unfortunately, we haven’t gotten a peek at Bucky Barnes’ Thunderbolts haircut just yet. However, if I were to describe it based on the information available, I’d say it’s significantly longer than his Winter Soldier days but shorter than his Falcon and the Winter Soldier phase. To put it simply, Bucky Barnes’ Thunderbolts haircut is no longer considered short; instead, it comfortably falls into the long category, extending past his ears and reaching about mid-neck. Frankly, I’m thrilled to see him sport a longer do!

Regarding the contrast between Bucky Barnes’ short and long hairstyles, it implies that he has accepted his departure from being the Winter Soldier. At the same time, he acknowledges that he can no longer be just James Buchanan Barnes. The return to a short cut appeared as an attempt to reclaim a persona that was essentially gone. On the other hand, the prolonged long hair wasn’t self-chosen. This extended hair phase seems to symbolize that Bucky can sport long hair because he understands his identity, which is neither completely who he once was nor fully the character he was meant to become. Although Bucky Barnes had short hair in the original Thunderbolts promotional material, we’re pleased with this change in hairstyle direction.

For now, it’s delightful to have Bucky Barnes with his long hair return; we weren’t fond of that previous hairstyle. It seems that the film, titled Thunderbolts, will explore themes in shades of grey. This movie is set to hit theaters on May 2, 2025.
