‘Star Wars: The Skeleton Crew’ was an unanticipated success within the community. Upon its debut, it received outstanding reviews and audience approval, maintaining this throughout most of its series. As we eagerly await the next episode, Bryce Dallas Howard has shared her thoughts on episode 6, titled ‘Zero Friends Again,’ which she directed.
In Episode 6, the character played by Jude Law, named Jod Na Nawood, gets caught by his former comrades and faces execution. Yet, he manages to persuade them to commute his sentence and instead embark on a joint quest to uncover a massive treasure with him.
To win them over, he narrates an epic tale of Captain Tak Rennod and then breaks into a well-known space sea shanty detailing Rennod’s exploits. This shanty has become quite famous, causing the entire crew to participate, marking the debut of a “space sea shanty” in the Star Wars galaxy.
One of the most captivating scenes in the production is indeed a sight to behold, and with pirates come shanties! Interestingly enough, Bryce Dallas Howard has disclosed that Jude Law was the one who transformed what was initially planned as a recital into a lively shanty.
Initially, it was merely a poem; however, Law proposed setting it to the tune of a pirate sea shanty, which everyone found delightful. Howard praised Law as an exceptional actor and a wonderful individual, brimming with energy and motivation. She expressed that working with him was a pleasure, and her father, who later collaborated with Law, was astounded by his skills and optimistic demeanor.
HOWARD: “Tak Rennod flew, far, far…”, Jude suggested transforming it into a shanty, since that’s what pirates often do, preserving their lore in this manner. We thought it was an excellent idea, so Jude Law, please go ahead! It turned out to be such a delightful scene to create and direct. I’m thrilled you appreciated it!
Jude Law is a top-tier actor, one of the best in the business. He’s not only incredibly talented but also a genuinely wonderful person. My father had the pleasure of working with him shortly after, and when he asked about Jude, I said, “Brace yourself. You’re about to experience being in director nirvana.” It’s no exaggeration. As an actor, Jude is energetic and fully committed. He’s supportive and uplifting, always ready with a positive, “yes-and” approach that’s smart and hardworking.

Additionally, she mentioned that rehearsing the same scene numerous times during filming can tire out not just the main actors, but also the supporting artists and pirate characters. When energy levels dip, it negatively impacts their performances, particularly for Law, who plays a character with a complicated past fighting for survival.
She underlined how each character’s unique background and circumstances lend a deep emotional impact to the situation portrayed in the scene.
Furthermore, the scene involves a speech being delivered. During filming, this can be repetitious for both the main actor and supporting artists, such as the pirates, which can lead to fatigue. When energy wanes, it affects everyone, including Jude, causing him to lose connection with the authenticity of the scene. In truth, this man is not just fighting for his life but also battling alongside individuals he has lived with, worked with, and deceived. The history between them is vast, and as you mentioned, each character’s circumstances are unique, having followed different life paths that have led them to where they are now.
The episode features numerous allusions to traditional pirate tales, borrowing themes from these timeless classics. One of the songs, specifically the one concerning Rennod, could be a tribute to “Treasure Island,” where characters sing a tune that hints at the location of the hidden treasure. In “Skeleton Crew,” this song might also conceal information about the final destiny of the legendary pirate, Rennod.
The scene recalls an ancient pirate custom – the ‘walking the plank’, but in this case, it’s more like being tossed overboard, only instead of water, it’s the void of space outside the airlock. This practice is reminiscent of Star Wars, a universe where such scenes are prevalent, as demonstrated in series such as ‘Clone Wars’ and ‘Rebels.’
