People who loved the NBC show Hannibal are still hoping it will return for a fourth season, and the show’s creator, Bryan Fuller, recently shared some news about its potential future.
In a recent interview on The Horror Queers podcast, director Fuller discussed the challenges of making a fourth season of his show. He said the main issue is securing the rights to the story it’s based on, ahead of his new film Dust Bunny, which comes out December 12th.
As a huge fan, I’m thrilled to hear almost everyone wants to revisit this world! Hugh Dancy, Mads Mikkelsen, and so many others – Lawrence Fishburne, Katie Isabelle, Caroline Dhavernas, Lara Jean Chorostecki, Aaron Abrams, and Scott Thompson – are all eager to continue the story. It’s just become a bit tricky with the sad loss of Martha de Laurentiis, the producer who really made it all happen.
He explained that the rights to the material are gradually returning to Thomas Harris, though MGM and Amazon still control portions of it. He noted that sorting out these rights will be more complicated now, but he’s actively communicating with everyone involved and encouraging them to collaborate.
Fuller also suggested ways to keep the story going, including a possible new take on The Silence of the Lambs that could bypass legal issues with Gaumont International Television, the company that produced Hannibal.
Fuller explained that performances can’t be copyrighted, so they’re exploring ways to work around existing rights issues and potentially create new possibilities for projects they’re currently limited from pursuing. He also mentioned the idea of casting Zendaya as Clarice Starling in a remake of The Silence of the Lambs.
Fuller has a clear vision for Season 4 of Hannibal, but he felt the first season relied too much on standard crime procedural elements. He explained, “I know exactly what Season 4 would be, and I was frustrated with Season 1 because it felt like a typical ‘murder of the week’ show.”
I didn’t initially love the show as a viewer, but I felt Season 2 was an improvement. However, it was Season 3 where things really clicked for me – it showed me the kind of stories this show could tell, and what I wanted to create. I’ve noticed some people dislike Season 3, and I think if that’s the case, they won’t enjoy the direction we planned for Season 4, as it continues that same storyline.
A new season is on hold until some legal issues are settled, but the show’s creator and cast still want to continue the story, according to Fuller.
