Bruce Willis’ family is looking forward to the holidays, and his wife, Emma Heming Willis, says they’re still finding joy in the season despite the changes brought about by his diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia. She recently shared with People magazine what the holidays are like for them now.
Emma acknowledged that while the holidays may have changed, they still hold a special meaning. “It’s still a happy time, just different now,” she shared. She added that Christmas was always particularly beloved by her husband, Bruce, and their family continues to celebrate it with him.
“Bruce always enjoyed Christmas, and we still love celebrating the holiday with him, though things have changed, so we’ve adjusted,” she explained.
The actor, who is now 70 years old, began experiencing aphasia in 2022, and was later diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD). This led to his decision to stop acting. Since then, his wife, Emma, has been increasingly vocal about raising awareness of dementia.
She’s been sharing her experiences through interviews and on social media, and she’s also written a book titled The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path. The book explores the challenges and rewards of caregiving, and how to find inner strength when facing tough times.
Emma pointed out that the holidays can be difficult for families who are caring for a loved one with dementia. However, she also feels it’s still possible to find joy and create special memories. She playfully suggested that one tradition should always remain: watching the movie Die Hard, because she considers it a Christmas classic.
She also advised families to be adaptable and embrace change. She explained that even with dementia, it’s possible to continue enjoying life and create new memories while still honoring familiar traditions. She emphasized that while dementia presents challenges, it doesn’t erase joy or laughter; it simply changes how those experiences look and feel. She believes it’s important to avoid focusing solely on the negative aspects of the condition.
Bruce and Emma got married in 2009 and have two daughters together, Mabel, age 13, and Evelyn, age 11. Bruce also has three older daughters – Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah – from his previous marriage to Demi Moore.
Emma shared that she now finds the most joy in everyday moments with Bruce. She explained that simply being present with him brings her a sense of calm and happiness. As she put it, ‘Our life is very simple, it always has been. The real joy comes from being able to be present with him, being his wife, and sharing those moments.’
Her book, The Unexpected Journey, is now available and provides helpful advice and emotional support for those caring for others.
