Broadcom: Chips, Dividends, and the Inevitable

The future, as always, runs on silicon. Artificial intelligence, this latest bit of human ambition, needs chips. Lots of them. Without these little wafers, all the bright ideas stay ideas. So it goes.

Broadcom, you see, makes those chips. Not the flashy ones Nvidia gets all the credit for, but the workhorses. The ones that quietly keep the data centers humming. They’re building what they call “AI accelerators,” which is a fancy way of saying they make the computers think a little faster. Hyperscalers – those big cloud companies – are buying them. And start-ups, too. Everyone wants a piece of the thinking machine.

The stock price dipped recently. Twenty percent, they say. The world, predictably, had a bit of a wobble. Geopolitics. Always geopolitics. It’s a good time to ask yourself what you’re looking for. A quick buck? Forget about it. This isn’t about getting rich overnight. It’s about finding something solid. Something that actually does something.

Broadcom and the Thinking Machines

Nvidia makes a fine product. A plug-and-play solution, they call it. But the big boys – Alphabet, for instance – they want things tailored. Customized. They don’t want a toaster oven when they need a particle accelerator. So they turn to Broadcom. Broadcom builds them what they need. The Ironwood tensor processing unit, they call it. A mouthful. It trains their AI. The Gemini 3, if you’re keeping track.

Anthropic, the folks behind Claude, ordered a whole lot of these things. Ten billion dollars worth, and then another eleven billion. Delivered through Broadcom, of course, in a couple of years. OpenAI and Meta are also customers. Five of them, so far. It’s a small club, the folks who build the brains of the future.

But chips aren’t everything. You need roads for the information to travel on. Broadcom makes those, too. The Tomahawk 6 Ethernet switch. It’s fast. Really fast. Over a hundred terabits per second. Enough for even the most demanding AI. And they’re already working on the Tomahawk 7. Double the capacity. Because, naturally, we always need more.

Growth and the Inexorable Rise

They had a good quarter. Nineteen point three billion in revenue. Up twenty-nine percent. That’s a lot of money. AI is driving it, naturally. Eight point four billion of that came from AI products. Up a hundred and six percent. The numbers keep going up. It’s almost unsettling.

They have pricing power, which is a polite way of saying they can charge what they want. Net income is up thirty-three percent. That’s important, because, ultimately, it’s about the money. It always is.

Should You Buy?

So, the question. Should you buy Broadcom stock? Well, it’s not cheap. The price-to-sales ratio is twenty-three point five. Double what it used to be. That doesn’t leave much room for error. It’s not going to double overnight.

The price-to-earnings ratio is sixty-four point five. Twice the Nasdaq-100. Nvidia is cheaper, if you’re keeping track. It’s all relative, of course. Everything is.

Wall Street expects revenue to grow sixty-three percent next year, and forty-four percent the year after. Earnings per share should grow even faster. It looks good on paper. But that assumes everything goes according to plan. And things rarely do.

If you’re looking for a quick profit, look elsewhere. But if you’re willing to hold on for three to five years, and you’re comfortable with the idea of owning a piece of the future, Broadcom might be worth a look. It’s not a sure thing, of course. Nothing is. But it’s solid. And in a world that’s increasingly chaotic, solid is a rare and valuable thing. So it goes.
