Considering Murphy’s life, O’Grady proposed that the actress may not have had a robust network of support. During this period, Murphy was wed to Simon Monjack and residing with her mother, Sharon Murphy. O’Grady commented that Murphy’s husband seemed to provide her with a feeling of needing protection and reinforcement.

There was much talk about the potential health problems faced by Murphy, such as suspected eating disorders and substance abuse, before her passing. However, these allegations were denied by Monjack. On December 20, 2009, Murphy was discovered unconscious in her bathroom, surrounded by medications. A later coroner’s report determined that her death was due to pneumonia and drug overdose, with iron deficiency anemia also being a factor.

The situation grew more complicated as Monjack passed away under similar circumstances a few months later, fueling suspicions about foul play. A toxicology report, commissioned by Murphy’s father Angelo Bertolotti, hinted at potential poisoning due to high levels of heavy metals in her body. Bertolotti, who is now deceased, vehemently dismissed allegations of drug abuse or eating disorders, pledging to reveal the truth.

In 2019, Tony Bertolotti, Murphy’s half-brother, shared similar doubts, stating his conviction that the actress’s demise was not a tragic accident.
