As a film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that today, BritBox gave the go-ahead for their new Original series titled “A Taste for Murder.” This six-part crime procedural is a collaboration between Eagle Eye Drama and ITV Studios. The production kicks off on location in picturesque Croatia, with additional filming in Italy. The story unfolds against the stunning backdrop of Capri’s steep cliffs and fast tides.
In “A Taste for Murder,” the art of traditional Italian cuisine takes center stage, serving as a key element in each episode’s intriguing murder mystery. This series beautifully explores how food can strengthen connections, build communities, and provide solace amidst grief following tragic events. Can’t wait to savor this culinary and crime-filled adventure!
Warren Brown, famously known for roles in “The Responder,” “Trigger Point,” and “Ten Pound Poms,” plays DCI Joe Mottram, a renowned detective with the Metropolitan police. Following a heart-wrenching personal event, he decides to spend the summer on Capri with his daughter and Italian in-laws, seeking solace. Struggling to cope with his own sorrow and trying to mend his daughter’s wounded feelings, Joe finds himself drawn into the intricate local murder investigations on the island.
Phyllis Logan, who won a BAFTA for her role in Downton Abbey, takes on the character of Elena Da Vinale. She is portrayed as a quick-witted, deeply loyal, affectionate matriarch of the family, overseeing the restaurant’s front-of-house operations and being the mother of DCI Joe’s deceased wife.
Character Beau Gadsdon, recognized for her role in “The Crown,” portrays Angelica – a smart and razor-sharp 16-year-old daughter of Joe, hailing from South London. Haunted by the sudden demise of her mother, she finds solace in an emotional detachment from her father, and finds escape in the enchanting locale of Capri.
Joining the main characters are Urbano Barberini (known from Casino Royale), portraying Gennaro Da Vinale – a jovial family patriarch, renowned chef in the local area; Alessandro Fella (Barbarians 2) as Luca Da Vinale, Gennaro’s charismatic but wayward nephew; Gaia Scodellaro (The Equalizer 3) as Daria, a hardworking divorcée in the restaurant kitchen; and Alessandro Bedetti (Those About to Die) as Daniele, a young, flirtatious character who befriends Angelica and guides her through the island.
The crime series “A Taste for Murder” is the brainchild of Matt Baker (known for his work on shows like “Patience”, “Professor T”, and “Hotel Portofino”). The series is steered by director Jon Jones, who has previously worked on productions such as “Hotel Portofino”, “Whitstable Pearl”, and “Alex Rider”. Megan Ott, known for her work on “House of the Dragon”, oversees production. Jo McGrath, Walter Iuzzolino, and Carolina Giammetta serve as executive producers under Eagle Eye Drama, a division of ITV Studios. Additionally, Robert Schildhouse, Stephen Nye, and Jess O’ Riordan act as executive producers for BritBox.
Robert Schildhouse, President of BritBox North America and General Manager of BritBox International, commented, “The series ‘A Taste for Murder’ is not just your typical crime drama. Matt Baker and Eagle Eye Drama have skillfully blended mystery, culture, and emotion in a unique and genuine manner. We are thrilled to greenlight this production and eagerly anticipate BritBox viewers enjoying the clever script, stunning landscapes, and tantalizing recipes. Above all, ‘A Taste for Murder’ will challenge audiences to contemplate healing and connection in novel ways.
Jo McGrath, the Chief Creative Officer of Eagle Eye, expressed that “A Taste for Murder” is a captivating detective series which intertwines fascinating crime mysteries with heartfelt family drama. The scenic Amalfi coastline serves as the backdrop for this show. Food and cooking will significantly contribute to the narrative, symbolizing the internal struggles of our main characters, while also assisting the central family in mending old hurts. With a stellar cast and enticing culinary delights, this series promises to be an indulgent, hard-to-resist feast for audiences.
Matt Baker, the creator, mentioned that “A Taste for Murder” is not just a detective story but also a deep family drama. It delves into the challenges of preserving familial bonds amidst trauma and sorrow, while intertwining these themes with a sequence of bizarre murders that are uniquely tied to the enchanting Mediterranean island where the series unfolds. By blending crime and culinary arts, infusing British resourcefulness and Italian fervor, writing it has been an enjoyable experience for him. He’s eagerly anticipating the cast and crew to bring this production to life under the leadership and support of Eagle Eye, BritBox, and ITV Studios.
The mystery thriller titled “A Taste for Murder” is set to debut on BritBox, available in both the U.S. and Canada. This intriguing series will be made accessible globally through ITV Studios, while production assistance is being offered by Drugiplan.
