Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy’s Author Says the Film Defies THIS Stereotype About Women; Says She’s No One’s ‘Old Bat’

Helen Fielding, the creator of the Bridget Jones movie series from which the films are based, recently shared insights about the upcoming film Bridget Jones: Mad About You. During an interview with Variety, she expressed her sense of pride in the development and progression of the character, Bridget Jones, throughout the entire movie series.

Fielding never thought that the character of Bridget, initially penned anonymously in a column over 24 years ago, would still resonate today. She expressed pride that the character has a sizable following among Generation Z, stating that even her daughter’s friends find Bridget relatable.

Fielding suggests that the advent of social media has made life more challenging for today’s youth, particularly young women, who are preoccupied with their physical appearances and experience feelings of guilt because of societal emphasis on body positivity.

When people find themselves liking and connecting with Bridget, it fills the author with a sense of pride. Given Fielding’s extensive history in crafting this character, portrayed by Renée Zellweger on screen, she aspires to evolve the character in a manner that surpasses time.

Regarding the eagerly awaited fourth film of the series, Fielding intends for it to challenge some outdated perceptions about women, particularly those involving older women dating younger men. “There’s an abundance of misleading stereotypes in media and literature,” she noted. “Bridget isn’t just some old-fashioned character.

Initially, some criticism arose when Zellweger was chosen to play the lead British character on screen due to her American origin. Nevertheless, Fielding feels that she was an ideal fit for the role from the start.

After observing the world through Bridget’s perspective, the author initially struggled to picture the character until they encountered Zellweger. The actress brought a convincing accent, physical demeanor, and subtle acting choices that convinced Feidling of her casting suitability. “This blend is now intertwined with what I write for Bridget,” she noted.

Bridget Jones: Mad About You hit the theaters on February 12.
