Bridgerton Star Nicola Coughlan Calls Out Harry Potter Author JK Rowling for Celebrating UK’s Ruling Against Trans People

Nicola Coughlan, known for her role in Bridgerton, criticized J.K. Rowling following the latter’s endorsement of a U.K. ruling that impacted the transgender community negatively. Specifically, Rowling expressed approval for a Supreme Court decision that defined “sex” and “women” as biological terms, effectively excluding transwomen from these categories, as outlined in the Equality Act of 2010. In response, Rowling shared an image of herself celebrating the decision with a cigar and drink.

In addition to her endorsement, she expressed it on her social media outlet. She posted on her account, “It required three remarkable, persistent Scottish women, backed by many others, to bring this case before the Supreme Court. In victory, they’ve safeguarded the rights of women and girls throughout the UK. @ForWomenScot, I’m incredibly proud to know you.

Simultaneously, the Derry Girls actress found this unsettling as she criticized Rowling for endorsing the Equality Act. Coughlan expressed her sentiments on her Instagram, where she posted a story linking to an author’s article and added, “I prefer to pass on your new Harry Potter series; I wouldn’t even consider reading it.

Coughlan shared a video where she expressed her dismay over the Act’s decision. She went on to say that watching a vulnerable community face even more attacks through law was deeply disturbing and appalling. To see individuals rejoicing in this attack made her feel just as sickened, if not more so.

Regarding the actress’s remarks concerning the author, she was actually discussing the upcoming Harry Potter book series, a continuation of J.K. Rowling’s novels and a reimagining of the film saga headlined by Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint.

In terms of work, you’ll see Coughlan again in season 4 of Bridgerton, continuing her portrayal of Penelope Featherington.
