It feels pointless to even make predictions about big movie franchises these days – they’re so unpredictable! After Universal’s failed attempt at a shared “Dark Universe” with the disappointing 2017 film The Mummy, I thought they’d abandoned the idea for a while. Leigh Whannell’s lower-budget and well-received The Invisible Man, and the less successful Wolf Man, seemed to be the direction they were heading. But surprisingly, Universal is now trying to recapture the success of the original Mummy films with a new installment starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are discussing the possibility of returning as their iconic characters, adventurer Rick O’Connell and librarian Evelyn Carnahan, in a potential fourth Mummy movie. Fraser and Weisz first starred together in the original 1999 film and its 2001 sequel, The Mummy Returns. Fraser later appeared in the third film, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008), but Weisz did not reprise her role.
The upcoming film is directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known collectively as Radio Silence. They previously made the fun horror comedy Ready or Not and rebooted the Scream franchise with Scream (2022) and Scream 6. While I wasn’t a fan of the Scream reboots, I’m hoping The Mummy will be better. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this new Mummy film will disregard the events of the third movie and instead continue the story from the first two films set in Egypt.
This change might be connected to Warner Bros. and Blumhouse developing their own The Mummy movie, directed and written by Lee Cronin, who also made Evil Dead Rise. It could end up similar to The Real Ghostbusters, where two versions of the same concept exist. Their Mummy film is currently scheduled for release in April 2026.

Stephen Somers’ The Mummy updates the classic 1932 film by keeping the core idea of a resurrected Egyptian mummy searching for his lost love’s descendant, but adds thrilling action and adventurous tomb exploration inspired by Indiana Jones. It’s a genuinely enjoyable movie. While the second film isn’t quite as captivating, and the spin-off prequel The Scorpion King starring Dwayne Johnson doesn’t reach the same heights, the original remains a fun ride.
