Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, who starred together in the popular 1999 film “The Mummy,” are reportedly teaming up again for a new installment in the movie series. They’re preparing to revisit the world of ancient curses and exciting desert expeditions.
The latest installment in the film series, the fourth one, is directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known collectively as Radio Silence.
The filmmaking team is famous for the horror-comedy “Ready or Not” and the 2022 revival of the “Scream” franchise. Universal Pictures, known for classic monster movies and the original “Mummy” films, hasn’t made any official statement about this new project, according to Variety.
Brendan Fraser rose to fame as an action star in 1999 with the movie “The Mummy.” The film centers on Rick O’Connell, a treasure hunter played by Fraser, who unintentionally revives a dangerous, cursed priest from ancient Egypt. He’s aided by Evelyn, a brilliant Egyptologist portrayed by Rachel Weisz, as they navigate the resulting mayhem. “The Mummy” was a huge hit, making Fraser one of Hollywood’s favorite adventure heroes.
Brendan Fraser’s Rick O’Connell got two more adventures with “The Mummy Returns” in 2001 and “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” in 2008, though Rachel Weisz didn’t reprise her role until the second one. Universal then attempted a reboot in 2017 with Tom Cruise, but honestly, it didn’t really click with anyone. They had big plans for a whole ‘Dark Universe’ of monster movies, hoping to build a franchise, but those ambitions crumbled after the film underperformed at the box office.
Brendan Fraser has made a remarkable return to acting. After facing personal challenges and health issues that led him to step back from public life for a few years, he won an Oscar for his performance in the 2022 film “The Whale.” Around that time, he mentioned to Variety that he’d be interested in reprising his role as Rick O’Connell if a good opportunity arose. He admitted it would be tricky to make happen, but said he’d consider it if someone presented a compelling idea.
