Fantasy author Brandon Sanderson recently made a deal with Apple TV+ to adapt his popular Cosmere book series. Both Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive will be developed into both streaming series and movies. Sanderson has now shared details on his YouTube channel (reported by The Hollywood Reporter) about what fans can anticipate. He highlighted that Apple is giving him an unusually high level of creative control – much more than most authors get when their work is adapted for the screen. Having written in the Cosmere universe for two decades, Sanderson will not only write and produce, but also consult on the project and approve casting choices. Here’s what he told his devoted fanbase:
I’ve been working towards this for years. Earlier this year, in May, I went to Hollywood to present my ideas to all the major streaming services and studios. I had a lot of positive experiences, and this time felt different – I was meeting with studio executives and really exciting people. Ultimately, everyone wanted to adapt both Mistborn and Stormlight. I chose to work with Apple for a number of reasons. I enjoyed the atmosphere of all the meetings I had, and none of them were negative. While having creative control was a factor, it was more about the partnership itself, and Apple felt like the right fit. I’m impressed with what they’ve done with Apple TV+ and how carefully they release content.
The current idea is to make Mistborn into movies and Stormlight into a streaming series, but Brandon Sanderson says those plans are still subject to change as development progresses. He’ll have significant creative input, but won’t be the sole showrunner, which makes sense given his lack of TV experience. He’s looking for a co-showrunner to work with. Sanderson assures fans this won’t drastically delay his writing, and Mistborn Ghostbloods is still on track for a 2028 release – so don’t worry about a situation like George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire. That’s the goal, at least, and we’ll see how it all unfolds.
